Dear everyone in Mexico and Chile. I am planning to teach there, hopefully at a univ. I have a master in TESL, taught in Korea and Japan at univs and language schools. My questions:
1. Where do I look for univ jobs?
2. Do they offer 1 semester contracts, or I have to sign a year?
3. As Latin America is completely new to me, I am also considering a short-term position at a language school as a start. Was offered a job by Culturlingua, but too many hours for little money (I guess I was spoiled in Asia). Does anyone know about 2-4 month jobs starting in January?
Any info and insight is greatly appreciated! |

Santiago isn't the greatest place to teach. the pollution is terrible. the wages aren't bad for L.America $800-$1000....but, there are better places with an MA. for you, probably farther up North near Concepcion or Antofagasta. your best bet is to go private high school.
p.s. most Chile / Ecuador univ's pay very little, unless it's private and US-accredited. |

1. Very few are advertised in Mexico, it's more a question of being there, preferably around June/July as the semester starts in August. There's also some hiring for the January semester.
2. Depends, usually you'll have to sign for the semester at least, if not the whole school year.
3. You'll probably hate it, especially with the experience you have. You won't make more than $700 -$800 a month either. Language schools hire all year round really. Just walk in. |

Thank you both for your quick reply. Johninmaine, I'll pm you as soon as I look into my options in Chile and come up with questions.
Money is not that important, this would be more a cultural and language experience, still I would like to make enough to enjoy my stay. |

Ad on Dave's, TEFL.com, and other various TEFL websites, you can also cold contact uni's but I don't think that's very productive.

If a school is going to hire you from overseas, paying for a telephone interview and putting in a lot of time and effort into the hiring process. They would want someone who would stay AT LEAST a year. It's usually not worth the investment to hire for just one semester. And personally I think you're not settled in until about the third semester you are at a place.

Culturalingua is towards the bottom end of the pay scale, it's a good newbie job as they seem offer a fair amount of support for their teachers. But I don't know of any place that would want to hire someone for 2 to 4 months. It used to be that it would take more than 2 months to process your working visa. |
