Hi,

could someone please mention a pc software tool that translates chinese to pinying and english when moving the mouse over the chinese text?

I had it on my friends pc but bought my own pc and cant remember the name of the software.

Was it 'ken' or 'kan' or a similar short word with a 'k' in it? Laughing

thanks,

There is the ever-popular program from Kingsoft...installed on almost every computer on the mainland. It is pretty handy but no pinyin.. you have to be able to read a fair bit of Chinese already to find the English-Chinese usable. It also translates from Chinese to English.

This is probably the program you are thinking of.

Oh and there is a plug-in for firefox web browser that does hover over translating with pinyin, but it is only usable within the browser. You cannot use it in the rest of your system.

hope that helps.

the firefox add-on is called pera-kun, and i find it pretty darn excellent. some mistakes, and not every single character has been entered into its database yet, but overall really helpful. one of the best features is that it detects multiple-character words/phrases.

Yes, there are some:
- Stardict (free, from sourceforge, google please to find the exact location)
-Powerword ( a Chinese-made commercial software you can buy for up to 3 Yuan in any place that has computers and software). Has pretty good bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.

i tried that stardict, and i'd have to say it's nowhere near as good as the firefox add-on. does anybody know how to tweak the settings so that the pop-up windows don't appear for every single word on my computer (i.e., i want it to function only with chinese, not with english)? also, do any of the dictionaries have the ability to recognize multi-character phrases rather than just single characters? does anybody know?

www.adsotrans.com is pretty useful. Otherwise I've been using DimSum and it's quite helpful, though the program is incredibly slow to load and work. A friend gave it to me so I'm not sure where to get it from.
