I would like to know how you find out if a school can legally employ FT's.
Is there a web site? How or wheredo you contact the Chinese government about this? I am new to this and could use the help.

We have an English language list of SAFEA registered schools here:

What does this mean? Well this means that these schools are able to offer work permits to foreign experts which includes English language instructors. So schools that are on that list are your best bets if you have the choice.

Importantly that list is updated each year as more schools are added and some are removed for not abiding by SAFEA standards.

So my advice is to get final confirmation from SAFEA themselves. Check the following for an English language list of provincial offices so that you can contact the office in the area that you want to be:

You will find that having someone who can speak Chinese will be helpful if you contact them as although they have English speaking staff you may have trouble getting through.

Finally, there are legal teaching positions outside of the SAFEA situation such as short term work on F visas provided that no salary is paid to you within China so if that is what you are looking at then you can judge those offers on their own merits.

If you are here for more than six months and are looking for a salaried position then stick with the SAFEA registered guys would be my advice.

here they have a contact mail - and you can then either mail your querry about a specific school or ask for an up to date list

You ask to see a scanned image of their license for hiring FT's.

The buxiban site is not an official site and is one designed to produce a profit run by our very own Clark who tries to appear as a poster suggesting a good source of information. In no way does this site have the ability to prove that these schools listed as being SAFEA are in fact tied to that volunteer association. The post recommending that applicants check there are designed to generate revenue and should be consider suspect and to be taken with a grain of salt, that is "if" you want to supply the operator with cash.
