Can any one out there give me a brief idea about Booz Allen Hmilton in Saudi arabia? They have a recent ad in which they require esl instructors for the Saudi military. Any info is appreciated concerning package, work conditions, accommodation ...etc. |

Good employer. Good salaries. Alas only for US citizens - and I think - US residents. |

But not out of territoriality as with some other varieties, but because the people they hire have to undergo military secruity checks which can't be accomplished with other nationals.

So if the Brits do it then it is bad but when the Yanks do it, that is okay ? |

I think it all comes down to motivation to hire or exclude. I've known many Americans who did instrumentation work in the employ of BAE. These positions didn't require background checks as gyroscopes were pretty much public domain in the aircraft that they serviced. [This situation is different to the one I mentioned earlier in that BAH is required under contract, I believe to obtain DISCO clearance for it's contract employees in Saudi Arabia. Or, at least, that's the way it was explained to me.]
However, at the same time, Americans (and, funnily enough Canadians WEREN'T under the same constraint even though the spoken varieties are nearly identical) were ABSOLUTELY forbidden to be employed as English instructors. I felt and still feel that this is bad policy and sometimes drives a wedge between the two. I find it a much more positive circumstance where I currently work where both British and Americans (including other nationalities) can learn from each other and not overcorrect English learners by rigidly sticking to their own varieties. Students can learn a lot from instructors who understand that "every finger on the hand is different.

Just to say - fully agree with NCTBA about hiring policies. Sometimes it's a company decision, sometimes it's the client who may insist on a particular nationality. No point whinging about it.
By the way, BAH have received clearance from their client (RSNF) to hire non-Americans, so get your applications in and see what happens! |
