I remember reading somewhere that his grandmother said he was a 'good but troubled boy'. I wouldn't be surprised if his defence came up a case that he suffered psychologically as a child blah blah....how he needs counselling blah blah.....he may well be out in a short time....but what goes around comes around .... |
Well unforunatley for abuela, he is going to be more troubled in the next few months coming, hahaha!
The Spanish legal system is a crock but in this case it is a good thing because natural justice will take its course. |

I've just finished nine years teaching in various parts of Spain and don't remember racism being any more of an issue than it is in most other 'civilised' countries. For the past several years, however, the news reports have emphasised what the government sees as a worrying increase in cases of violence against women (although it may simply be that women feel more able to report it now). Those restraining orders issued by the courts don't seem to make any difference in the majority of cases either. |
This all depends what your nationality or skin colour is. My mother and her family who all live in Spain are South American and there has been a nasty turn in racist behaviour and moreso violence towards sudaca's
From official bodies like the police and guardia civil, to treatment in shops and bars and restraunts. The Spanish as a rule don't tend to hide their prejudices under a veneer of any sort. It is their most irritating trait. (that along with their narcism and rudeness)
A white European male is never going to be on the recieveing end of violent racism like a defenceless Ecuadorian woman would be. (as has been proved in this instance) |

In spite of that- do you like working there, or would you like to move to another country? (just curious)
And yes maybe the safest place for Sergi is prison |

You know, I'm in Korea now and a lot of the EFL teachers on the Korean forum here complain about the rudeness and the attitude of the Koreans but the Koreans are nothing on the Spanish.
I like Spain for a multitude of reasons which involve climate, cuisine and general way of life but their rudeness is one thing that never fails to wind me up.
I think there are better places to live for the 'Latin' experience or if you want to learn Spanish with Argentina being my top destination. In Argentina the people are nice and friendly and treat you like a human being.
But if you are an EU citizen then Spain is the most convienient place to live in regards finding work as an EFL teacher as there are plenty of opportunities. |

You're in Korea? ok, I just assumed that you were in Spain, because it says so in your the location part of your profile. I speak some Spanish, am EU and have already spent a year in Spain but never South America...maybe I should try out South America for the experience...I must admit I have been lurking for a long time in the South American forums...guess why I prefer Spain, is it's proximity to the UK (home) and other European destinations....but as they say, life's too short and it's always best to spread your wings |

I've only been in Korea for a fortnight but am enjoying it! Yup, I should change the location on my profile but I was there for awhile and am sure will be back.
I truly recommend Buenos Aires for a year or so, I love that place so much! It is like Barcelona but without the rude Catalan attitude. If I could get a work visa for Argentina I would be gone I'm telling ya!
How's Qatar anyway? Is it a good destination for EFL? |

Well, you've certainly given me food for thought bejarano- thanks!
Qatar is good for $$ and the travel opportunities from here especially Asia/Africa and the rest of the Mid East. But I do miss things like history, culture, landscape, variety of things to do....guess it's better for those with families etc but for single young ppl like myself it can be a tad difficult- it keeps my bank balance happy ....but at the same time there's more to life than $$...is the Mid East your next possible destination? |

Could be as now you have given me food for thought! I have never thought of the middle east before to be honest but I wouldn't mind a year in Qatar. I don't drink so that is one problem out of the way and I don't mind making a few quid so I'll look into that QC. Is there a lot of work going around?
Be sure to check out Bs As. There is lots of work and you don't need a work visa and I shouldn't be saying that after all the crap I give to the septics about working in Spain illegally on here... aaaaaaaaaargh!!!
But in Argentina you can work illegally as a teacher and nobody cares! |

I think you'll find that Doha will be VERY different from Buenos Aires
Is there plenty of work going around? YES if you have an MA but not much if you don't...places like QP, Bell, BC ...all recruit ppl without MA's but salaries/other benefits will be lower than other universities and college- but hey at least it's all tax free there are also many opportunities to teach 1 to 1 if you ever wanted to supplement your income. I guess a year or so would be good for the experience etc but don't expect it to have the passion and energy that Latin countries have |

yes, I think it's quite funny as well; we are horrified and disgusted at the violence that was visited upon one, yet we desire the same fate for the other?
The circle of violence must stop, somewhere. |

That's the way it goes sometimes, the trick is not to get so upset about it as to comment on it. No damage done?

Not one person apart from a commited nazi would will not cheer when this lowlife gets his just desserts. For once the Spanish judicial system is going to work against the favour of Sergei in its ineptitude, I look forward to the reports of this scumbag's demise in the upcoming months. It is a pity I'm not in Spain to administer it to this gutless douchebag myself. |

I worked for many years in the centre and north of Spain, where immigration isn't, perhaps, such a big issue. Many of my Spanish students ruefully admitted that Spaniards in general are a racist lot. In my experience the group which received most odium were the Gypsies (as in many European countries), closely followed by anybody who had arrived in the latest flood of immigration from Eastern Europe. Oh, and I forgot the 'moros', of course - generally Moroccan or Algerian. These groups were not only hated but also feared, and therefore left well alone. Sub-Saharan Africans, Asians and Latin Americans always seemed to be treated relatively well in comparison. Perhaps things are changing. |

Yes I apologise for this...but hey I started this thread myself! but yes I did get carried away...anyways back to the circle of violence....It's not violence it's called Karma...what goes around comes around...but to be honest I feel quite sorry for Sergio, he comes across as being very ignorant, probably had very little education...still NO excuse though. |

....yes, hard to say what will happen. ive been looking around the Spanish newspapers and don't see much except about the protests. like i said before, i read the Spanish courts are 'reorganizing' and won't be up to 'full speed' until Jan / Feb.
if i was his lawyer i really see only 3 defense routes: 1) security camera, can you put someone in jail from a camera?? 2) drunk 3) mentally unstable / insanity.
it's one thing if you get in a boyfriend / girlfriend fight, etc. but, to kickbox someone blind-sided still seems to me quite a bit worse. |

...i remember an incident while i was living in Ecuador. a man s*x. assaulted a 13 yr old in a small town there. the local people hunted him down, poured gasoline on him, and started burning him alive. the police got there a little late, but he survived with 90% burns on his body. |
