I know it sounds silly, but it's the truth. I have been living in Thailand for about 3 months, already started my teaching gig, but I am kind of lonely. I'm not single, so this isn't a personal ad, but seriously want some people to hang out with, go out with, go shopping with.

I would like to meet some females around my age (26) to be friends with. I am the youngest teacher at my school, and all of the other female teachers are married. Having a little trouble making friends.

My boyfriend is back in the US, so this really is not a personal ad. Just looking for some Westerners to hang out with.

Oh - I'm in Bangkok.

I'm beginning to understand loneliness myself.

Currently, I'm finishing my TEFL training in Pattaya and I would like to move up north to Chiang Mai to teach. However, I worry about what life will be like when all of my English speaking friends are elsewhere.

Are you currently teaching in Bangkok? How do you like it? Feel free to contact me via email if you'd like. I'd like to get back to Bangkok if only for the Chatuchak market and to see Wat Pho and Grand Palace.

My email is [email protected] if you'd like to make definite plans.

Where are you living?? If you're in Bangkok, I can understand the problem. The best advice, outside of going to bars where expats hang out, is to join some clubs or organizations which you might have an interest in. Check the BKK Post weekend section, or the insert they put in the paper (I forget what it's called but there's always interesting things for expats). In Chiang Mai, anyone who can't make friends is a hermit!! It's a small town and a perfect place for expats. There's tons of things to do and in a city of only 150,000, there's approx. 15,000 expats living there.

Hi there,
Is your TEFL training in Pattaya with BestTefl? I am thinking of joining them too for the April08 start. If your programme is with them, could you please tell me how is it? Are they a reliable company? How are the teachers-trainers there? I'd be interested in your general feedback on the company and things in general in Pattaya.

I have never been to Thailand but I am extremely excited about doing that programme.

Ricco,
How's Chiang Mai in general as a city? That's one city in Thailand that somehow appeals the most to me. Care to share some of your views on that city and life in general in North Thailand?

Thanks.

CM is a wonderful place but not without some drawbacks. It's very hot (but not as hot or humid as Bangkok) 8 months a year but from Novemeber through February it's delightful. The pollution problem is bad, sometimes worse than Bangkok and that's probably its worst feature. The city itself is small and easy to get around in. No mass transit yet but plenty of songtaews and tuk tuks. Food is superb!! Living is easy and cheap. Not a great music scene but lots of bars with local music and it's not half bad. Northern Thailand in general is beautiful. Mae Hong Song, Pai, and other places in the NW are great for hiking or just driving through. Isan is also quite lovely. Further south is Sukkothai which is very historic. Not speaking Thai wasn't a problem anywhere I went. Overall, Thailand is wonderful and CM was great. A great palce to hang your hat for a year or 2.
