Very few employers in Indonesia (except for the big hitters like BIS, and that's another market) will assume any kind of responsibility for a spouse. Not because they are sharks (even though EF certainly are), but because the visa and residence situation for a spouse is so darn complicated and expensive. Anyone with any experience of working in or doing business with Indonesia knows that - and EF has been here for quite long enough for their recruitment staff to know too.

The reason they won't offer a housing allowance instead of shared housing is probably because the shared housing costs them virtually nothing to provide in the first place. EF owner bought a house years ago in his wife's name with some cash that was too hot to bank, and using it to contain a few bules keeps it from being squatted by the local low-life.

I'm also concerned at the price you quote for the 'subsidised' TEFL course. Is that figure in USD or GBP? If the latter, you could have taken a pukka CELTA or Trinity TESOL course for that money which would be worth far more than the EF certificate - which isn't recognised by some employers.

Is your Mrs a native speaker?

If so, come to Shanghai, work for EF and she can get a teaching job (or another job: asiaxpat.com) and her own visa.

Or just pay the 200 quid and be done with it.

BTW, Jakarta is not the best place in the world to bring the Mrs. The nightlife is very much geared towards the single man.

How very strange! The OP has suddenly withdrawn all his grievances from this forum.

One imagines the nice people at EF have been somewhat persuasive.

Lol, oh, malu, no such thing has happened...although one might assume as such. EF is still EF (so that is saying a lot), and I'm still licking my wounds after our fight with one another. In the end, I had to part ways with EF and venture into other pastures. I don't hate them either, although I still just wished I'd saved my money. I'm just happy that I learned my lessons about them while I was still on my home soil. I am hardheaded in so many other facets of life...but there is no way in hell I'm playing like that when it comes to moving thousands of miles from home!
