25%
Can the rest of the tertiary schools be far behind? |

I still haven't heard from my sources if it has been confirmed 25% of what. Is it full pay or base pay? If it is base pay, it will be a less than 10% rise once it appears in your bank account if things follow the usual route.
HCT did its raises last year. Anyone know about ZU? Who knows if the private universities will follow...

and so far as I know, UAEU's scale was the lowest of the more desireable tertiary institutions to start with - if they're earning 10k now, a flat 25% increase would bring them up to 12.5 - still lower than many entry level positions at HCT |

As far as I know new hires at UGRU are on over 13k per month. The April pay rise was a princely (sheikhly?) 500dhs and then some got a merit pay increase - but there are still plenty of experienced teachers who have been there for several years earning less than the new hires.
Apparently the increase will apply to the whole salary but it will have the effect of increasing differentials. The newbie on 13500 will get 16875 and the old lag on 12500 will get 15625. Instead of getting 'just' 1000 more than the experienced teacher the newbie will be on 1250 more.
Next question: why does anyone stay in UGRU? |

I remember once being told by a bloke, who then worked at UGRU in a senior co-ordinators position, that the people he was interviewing, who had only just completed their MA, would be paid more than him! |

apologies on the UAEU info - it was (at best) third hand. However, from personal knowledge, most people coming into HCT (as a caveat I base this on content teachers, not English) earn more than 14000 to start. |

I wish HCT was starting the EFL staff at 14,000, but from what I hear it's more likely to expect 11,000-12,000 (more if you have more tertiary exp) |

So... why is it that we have never heard here about the fact that UAEU is starting its EFL teachers at more than HCT?
The impression that I have received is that it was less.
And now they will be getting another 25% more? Or is this raise just to bring the old hires up to the level of the new hires?

As I said before it's the same for everybody. So the Professor and Chair on 60k a month will see their salary go up to 75k, and the old UGRU lag on 12K will get 15k, and the new UGRU on 13500 will get 16875. Differentials will increase even further. |

At HCT, experience counts for next to nothing UNLESS you are prepared to negotiate before you sign a contract. There are ESL instructors with Master's working for less than new hires without.
Also, it's not unheard of for good teachers with years of expereince to suddenly not have their contracts "renewed".
Be careful, be very very careful when considering accepting an HCT offer. |

Looks like this raise will get the old timers up to the 14000/mth range while the newbies will be making 16500/mth. OUCH! I guess the only reason to stay on more than 4 years or so is the fact that it is quite stable. Also way less nonsense than HCT, great holidays and nice lifestyle in Al Ain (much better weather than the coast). |

And there is a lot to be said for those things... especially if you are in a department with reasonable managers.

Why is it all these institutions discriminate against old staff? So many of them are into this racket. Qatar University is one of the worst
new staff earn more than 20% what the old staff get. What's the deal on this? This kind of deal is one of the things that made me reject the QU offer. Seems imnmoral to me. Maybe some people don't see it as a problem but a place that discriminates between old and new is a place to be wary of.
It seems like nobody values old staff. Means people should keep moving on, I reckon. |
