I've got a buddy claiming one can easily make US $4000-5000 a month teaching EFL in Vietnam. He says most of the money comes from teaching Korean expats and their children. I find this hard to believe. He palns on moving to Vietnam in the next year from Korea where one can make that kind of money if one really humps it day and night. What is a realistic salary range?
Thanks.

I'd say a realistic salary range for most full time teachers is $1500 - $2500 US a month. I don't know how much money can be made from teaching Korean expats.

You cannot make $4K to $5K here. It's not even mathematically possible.

I know a couple of real go getters here. They are hard workers. They work lots of hours in the mornings and afternoons 6 days a week, and sometimes 7. Then at night to do Korean privates. Privates in Vietnam pay nowhere near what they do in Korea. And with privates you cannot get block hours, because you will have to drive all over town. It's a different market.

If someone is leaving Korea to come to VN for financial reasons something is odd. If you are interested in earning and saving, it's Korea. And only Korea.

Thanks for the replies. Out of curiosity, does anyone teach Korean expats? How about in a Korean school? What's the going rate for private lessons?

i've taught korean expat kids who attend int'l schools nearly 2 years ago. the going rate was any where from $20 - $30 per hour.

as for making 4k-5k a month teaching is complete bs. to make that much, you'd have to not sleep and work 24/7/365(6).

Thanks, I asked because I don't think my friend knows what he's getting into and his assumptions are kind of frightening. He's giving up a cushy job that, along with privates, allows him to earn $4000-5000 a month and up to $6000 during the vacations. He also has his housing provided but he thinks he can do better in Vietnam (he's older and has a kid back home along with alimony to pay). He figures with the cost of living difference he can save an additional $1000 a month in Vietnam. I am trying to talk him out of it as his main priority until his kid becomes of majority age should be money. I don't where he got his ideas but he's pretty sure he'll be making $4000-5000 right off the bat.

If you wish to discuss living and teaching in Korea, please do so on the Korean Job Forums where there is a wealth of pertinent information.
