I figure that those doing the hiring don't know enough about teacher training courses to realize that there are other good ones out there and are just looking for the name brand as an easy way to speed up the hiring process. (Basically, they're lazy and/or uninformed--not the sorts of folks I want to work for!) I don't even bother applying... I figure I can do better and look into schools that actually spend some time looking at reputable qualifications.

British Council require a CELTA. I'm not sure that they are lazy with their recruiting though.

Well, I've never applied for British Council positions and don't really care to. I imagine that an American with a "generic" certificate isn't their ideal candidate anyway! Wink

I have a B.A. in Communications, an M.A. in Speech Communications, even with no ESL units I was easily hired..I eventually learned how to teach and discovered a passion for teaching. Three years in the profession, I decided to take the CELTA. I learned so much from the course as opposed to the TEFL certificate I had taken earlier. Having CELTA in my CV made it look good!...unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference to the hiring managers. They weren't familiar with it either. "Pathetic" rates not withstanding, I have no regrets doing the CELTA, it has made me a better trainer.
