The shirt can't be any older than about three weeks I'd say...

It's true that for Japanese passports/IDs and the such, Japanese are not supposed to smile, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. I highly recommend that you smile. I smiled a huge smile for all my Japanese picture and that was always the first the employer mentioned. "You looked so happy in your picture." I always smile in pictures because I look much better when I smile. You should put your bets face forward.

Hmm. I have nothing further to add except a few random thoughts.

True. Annoyingly true. Is it just me, or is the mouth covering titter no more dignified then simply smiling naturally?

Having dyes or tints in your hair may be frowned upon as well.

Shocked ShockedShockedShocked Well, actually I do know that many employers have such rules. I also know that the under 30 popluation of Japan with black hair could probably fit into a VW beetle. And that people of ethnic Japanese origion are pretty much all born with black hair... . If you have a well done hair dye job that a man (not PC I know, but in all of the full and part time jobs I had in Japan, I was only hired by a woman once) wouldn't notice as garish by glancing at a photo, then don't worry.

I just go the whole nine yards when it comes to pictures (I had to have tons of pictures taken for my various Chinese ID cards. I have no fewer than 5 Rolling Eyes). I had passport photos taken. Shirt, jacket and tie. Nice hair cut and no jewelry. Obviously that would be for a guy like me, but some good, equivalent fashion advice for women has already been given on this thread.

The legitimate reasons for asking for a photo are: to demonstrate if the candidate can look professional, to attach a face to a file number, and to be able to identify you on sight when they finally meet you. It's also, incidently, the sort of photos I've seen stapled to Japanese resumes and student files. Such a photo suits is purpose quite well, I think.

Those sorts of photos are rather expensive. But some things in life are worth the price. The last time I had such photos taken I asked for a bunch of prints. If you get the job, then it just might have been worth it. Alternatively, you could just take a decent passport-style photo on your own against a neutral background.

Just some hopefully helpful thoughts.

About dying your hair... My hair is naturally dark brown, some just call it black. I used to dye my hair in Japan and my Japanese employers loved it. I look back and it looks so unnatural and harsh. I asked why was I not only allowed to dye my hair, but "encouraged" to dye my hair an unnatural orange-tryint-to-be-blonde shade. Their response was that I wasn't Japanese and I could pull it off. Don't worry about dying/perming your hair. As long as it's not Kool Aid colors, Japanese won't hold it against you or think you are unprofessional; rather they think you are "oshare" or "stylish".

Make up and piercings are another story.

Thank you. I am definitely going to smile. Very Happy

I had to reschedule my mug shot shoot because I got the flu. Sad I'm almost better. For those of you in the states who think a professional shoot is expensive, let me tell you that it depends where you go. Wal-Mart is about $6, and the JCPenney's portrait studio is $15 or so, plus they can e-mail your pix to you the same day.

I'm wearing a dark navy blazer with a white blouse buttoned up to the neck, and no jewelery except for pearl stud earrings. Cool

I still haven't decided if I'm going with my hair up or down. Confused If anyone has any more advice on that matter please let me know.

Thanks, you've all been so helpful. Very Happy Very Happy

heh, everyone knows the real reasons for photos - they want to know if you are cute! so just look like a little bunny rabbit stuffed into a suit, smile with your eyes, look demure and a little seductive, and don't show teeth. no one'll hire a strict looking schoolmarm.
