I crossed the Bolivia/Peru border about a month ago with surreally little hassle. But I hear this is changing--that Morales & Friends are going to start hitting up Americans (probably others too?) for a $100 visa to enter, starting Dec 1.
Any truth to this? Or am I just adding to an unsubstantiated rumor... |

......i wouldn't doubt it. they probably want the 500,000 x $100 US tourist fee...also, to upgrade their 'visa computer system' so they can run checks on you.
in 1997, they had 375,000 tourists. |

It's worse than that John and Sistaray. Here is the proof from the US Embassy in La Paz:

http://bolivia.usembassy.gov/wm10052007.html
US was put in group 3 which means visas with consultation with the immigration in La paz. After realizing that was stupid, they now will issue at the border using an abbreviated procedure, but they can easily change it at any time.
The fee is $100.
It's a joke. |

...thanks for the link. that is a joke, "The Honorable Embassy of the United States". i don't think they'd use our US$ as toilet paper, for fear of being corrupted by the evil evil Western minds.
so, now we've been moved from Group I to Group III, alongside Rwanda and Angola?? got to be kidding... |

Was it less than $100 before to get the visa?
Other countries...Chile and Brazil I think, raised their visa costs to Americans to bring it in line with what the US charges those citizens for the visas. Tit for tat I think. |

...used to be $0, but there was a lot of 'fake' charging by guards. or, in other words, charging when there really wasn't a charge.
maybe this makes it official, so they can also crack down on illegal border charges.
actually, i can't blame them. they need the money. |
