Such wind as scatters young men through the world,
To seek their fortunes farther than at home
Where small experience grows
-Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew

Hi everyone. like many before me I've decided I want to go teach ESL in Taiwan - for the usual reasons - to pursue an interest in mandarin and hopefully make a little money.
I was hoping to ask the group for some specific advice on qualifications. I have a 4 year BA (hons) in English Literature from a very good Australian university. So I'm currently not qualified to teach per se. I'm planning to fly into taipei and find a job once I get there. I was wondering what you all think about whether it is advantageous for me to get a CELTA certificate? It will take one month full time and cost $2700 AUD, or about a month and a half's wages teaching ESL in taiwan.
That said, if it would increase my salary enough to pay for itself over one or two years I'd be happy to do it just so I'd feel more confident in methodology or whatever.
I'm basically planning to work as hard as possible in taiwan while taking a few hours a day to study mandarin and a few more hours a week to drink Smile
So, should I pay $2700 and one month of my life to do CELTA or not? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks guys.

In Taiwan, CELTA is simply not a necessity. It's just not required by employers or for visa purposes here and it certainly WON'T increase your salary. There is more or less a set rate for foreigners in most schools-- regardless of how many letters a teacher has after his name-- and that can only be negotiated up with real experience or local negotiating skills.

So my advice is if you want to come here and tefl for a while, save the money and time and just come here. I'd advise CELTA, ironically, for when you go home and want to teach esl there as jobs more often ask for such things in our countries of origin.

Thanks for the prompt reply, TaoyuanSteve. I've been suspecting that a CELTA certificate might not help my situation at all. I think I'll definitely save myself the time and money and just come over sooner!
