Last week in La Hora there was an article about the animal shelters in Santiago and the difficulties they're going through financially. I met with the president of one of these shelters (Sociedad Protectora de Animales Benajmin Vicuna Mackenna) and my girlfriend and I are going to help them to increase awareness in the community about their project and hopefully to raise some money for them.

Right now I am building them a web-page, which I should have up and running by the end of the week.

Mostly our plan is going to be a grass-roots effort....putting up flyers in the more affluent neighborhoods to try and get donations, handing out leaflets at the metro stops, doing food drives at schools, and having teachers network through their students to drum up support. Let's face it, English teachers have access to some of the wealthiest people in Santiago, many of whom hold a position in their company that would allow them to make a real contribution.

Even if you're willing to chip in just a few hours one day (or now and again on the dead time we all have between classes)

If you'd like to help out but don't want to make a committment, it would be great if you could just pass out some fliers to your students, or even do a reading comprehension about the problem of abandoned animals in developing countries and write the local web page on the board.
