Hey Everyone. I have a very serious question to ask. I just received my degree in history this past May. I plan on getting my ESL certification next month so I can begin my teaching career. I just recently discovered that three bad checks I wrote in 2005, when I was 20, will not be elgible for expugement. This leaves me with a criminal background for check fraud. I would like to know if it is still possible to receive teaching positions in most countries with a felon on my record. I know that a lot of schools will do an FBI clearance before a teacher is hired, but I'm not sure how this works for teachers with a criminal background. Please help me out here so I can know what to expect. I'm hoping the responses will be positive.
Thanks a lot. |

I think it is going to depend on the specific country. If you have a country in mind - go and ask on that board. Some countries do no background checking, some require something similar to an FBI clearance before you can get your visa/work papers - and some countries don't actually do any checking until you are already there.
In my experience it is not usually the school, but rather an immigration and/or Ministry of Education requirement. |

So for the most part, if a country requires a background check, I may not be granted a visa due to my circumstance. |

I would think so.
But, it may depend on the classification of the crime. Misdemeanor or felony and/or what it was called. Misdemeanor and called something minor - you might be okay. Felony and called fraud - probably not okay. But - I don't know much on this issue - and lots of things fall through the cracks . . .
Take a shot at it and see what happens. Everyone has a lot of excuses for not trying something quite different and yours might be more valid than some others - but you could well find it is not an issue at all - and what a waste if you didn't even try. |
