Hi folks,
I've been out of the classroom (but working in educational technology and e-learning) for the past 3 going on 4 years. I'll graduate with my MEd TESOL this December. Just wondering how long I can delay returning to teaching before it's a detriment to my career in teaching. |

I am basing my vote on total speculation, but I would think that more than 2 years after an MA with zero teaching would start looking suspect to them. I would at least try to do some related part-time teaching - if one is in a situation where full time isn't available for a few years.

One year is the max to wait, otherwise you loose the momentum, confidence and skills you acquired from taking the MA. As VS mentioned it also looks dodgey with a big gap in time on your resume.
Also the longer you wait the longer the gap of no experience which is a deterent in getting the job you want. Better to jump right in and take a job even if it isn't your first choice...you gain valuable experience along the way; nothing wrong with working your way up the ladder with experience.
I don't see how anyone with an MA in TESOL would not be able to find work...part time or full time; there are jobs available all over the world just waiting for YOU! The sooner you start the faster you pay off debts and making/saving the cash.
However, I guess some people have legit reasons for not getting into the teaching right away...I would be interested to know what those excuses are er I mean reasons. |

Fortunately the MA is paid off, but we're currently in the US, and even finding one EAP class at the local community college has proved near impossible (trust me...I've been watching for several months now ) I'm graduating in December (in'sha'allah), so if it's not August 2008 to start, I suppose I can take a chance and apply for Jan 2009 jobs. Thoughts on that? |

It is easy to find work in EAP. Just offer classes for free and you will find that there are plenty of work. When you have built up trust from the students then begin charging. You don't need to be paid to get experience |

Teach for free ? I never hear of people driving buses for free. What is the difference between driving buses and teaching English ? |

So a person with some years of experience teaching and an MA is below the level of a bus driver... and needs to start out by giving free lessons... ??
no way... and a suggestion that shows us the level of status of a TEFL MA in the US...

Uncle Scot, there is a no difference between driving a bus and teaching English. Driving a bus you need a 'brain' and a qualification, and teaching English also you need a 'brain' and a qualification. |
