I've good experiences with Casa Ridgway too. I lived at JC and Friends (which has nothing to do with Jesus Christ) on Paseo Colon for a while, that was very nice too.

Thanks for all the great suggestions folks. I've copied down a few of them, and Casa Ridgeway in particular looks like a great budget option. They have a straightforward website that doesn't have that "rip off the gringo" feel to it.

Also, if anyone knows of hotels/hostels outside of San Jose, please suggest them as well. Those seem to be very hard to get information on. Areas I'm still interested in include:

Heredia
Alajuela
Santa Anna
Liberia
Santa Cruz

Lonely Planet has a few entries for Alajuela, Liberia and Heredia in the LP Costa Rica guide. I can look them up for you if you want. Other than that, the locations you are talking about aren't prime desitinations for tourism, that's why it's hard finding information about them.
