Mangoholic: I guess you have never been in a third world country if you think Taiwan is third world. You are like too many foreigners who come here, you complain about everything...makes me wonder first why you come, and second why you stay...are you from South Africa? Those people complain all the time about Taiwan...so why do they come? They come because they can't find jobs in South Africa, some people do hire them here! Talk about third world!
I have a policy in my life and I have been to a few countries, "When in Rome learn to do how the Romans do, or leave!" |

rmarquaxyz4 or whatever,
Makes me think that you don't live in Taiwan. I have been to several 3rd world countries, including Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. All of those countries have GDPs far lower than Taiwan's, yet Taiwan (basically anyplace outside of Taipei City proper) actually LOOKS poorer.
That's because the Taibodians PREFER to live like shit!
The Laotians and Cambodians -and I have been to rural areas of both (though I won't call up your travel resume, because I'm not interested in hearing about)- cannot afford to live any better, yet their destitute existence does not come off nearly as foul, heinous and polluted as Taiwan's.
Makes me think that perhaps you live in the Hsin-yi area, and have never seen: San Chong, Hsinjuang, Linkou, Kwei-shan, Taoyuan City, Jhong-li, Chiayi, Taichung County, Yunlin, Tainan County, Changhua (outside of Lukang Temple), Kaohsiung, Pingtung...MUST I go on....? |

The previous poster actually was reduced to saying that Jong Li was "nice" -I will go on to assert that Jong Li is the 2nd most hideous *beep* in Taiwan after Taoyuan City.
Taiwan's new name is "Taibodia" -not a new term, but one that might have been forgotten. Let's not forget it.
Taiwan is a 3rd World Country, regardless of it's GDP.
Taiwan+Cambodia= Taibodia
That's where you live |
Taiwan is 3rd world? Lol, please back that up. |

Sounds like someone's in stage two of culture shock (loving -lothing-living) and not dealing with it very directly.
mangoholic, I request that you find another outlet for your bile and add only comments of general interest or at least try for biased opinion rather than ignorant rantings. Taiwan is not a third world country and is nothing like Cambodia (either the worst or the best of it). Statements like that merely serve to lead one to the conclusion that everything you write is equally false.
Thank you,
Cat |

To be fair...and to play devil's advocate for a very brief moment...
I think to a certain extent, that every single one of us has complained about a foreign country we've been in. I heard much of the same stuff from foreigners when I was in Japan, and there were more than a few times when I was in Japan when I wanted to punch a hole in a door (or another person!)
Mangoholic's comments are very interesting in that I heard the exact same things from some people when I was in Japan, and even before I went there - that people in Japan live much worse than people in other Asian countries.
And in some aspects, they really do...most Japanese housing is the most expensive, lowest quality, and the smallest and most cramped of any country I have ever been to, and I saw so many Japanese people that were so afraid of being poor, even though the vast majority of them would never have any idea of what being poor actually means.
However, those are very minor points about a country that is by and large an excellent place to live, and a place I like even more than my home country.
But not to go off on another tangent here...I very much doubt Taiwan is a third world country, and while I can sympathize with Mangoholic because we've all been there, I must ask...
If you hate it so much man...why not just leave?
I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, it's just an honest question really!
But I think I know the answer to why people complain and don't leave...it's because despite the bad points of Taiwan, Japan, fill in the blank with a country name...it's often times a better lifestyle than one's own country!
Or I could be totally way off track here...any comments are appreciated! |

Taiwan is not a 3rd world country, one does not enter into Southeast Asian squalor when one leaves the Taipei city limits and, of course, my comments are exaggerated. However, for those familiar with Taiwan, they're not too exagerrated. I guess I hope that some can see that.
Not the slums of Manila? Of course not, gimme a break.
But ugly, nasty? Yes. More than average for a country of its GDP? You bet. |

I agree that Taiwan is *not* a third world country; China is a third world country and I sorely miss first world countries, thank you and good night. |
