northern? well in that case, why not shoot for Sante fe, it is even fursther to the north?

Three recommondations for you

Dalian, Dalian, Dalian. I am a confirmed henanite. But I would take Dalian over Beijing or Qingdao in a second.

I am going to do my one second sterotype of you and say that you don't want to live like a Chinese, you want to live like a laowai (ie, occasionally actually stay out past 10:00), while still experiencing China in some degree of comfort and hospitality. Dalian is the city for you. Trust me.

I cant really blame anyone here for not wanting to stay out after dark let alone 10:00. here in Da Li we get lots of maniac motorcyclists thrashing round the streets with no crash helmets as soon as the sun hits the brown sludge about an hour before sunset... no fancy a change from listening to cantonese all the time and want to make my mandarin moderately better

Why not try the North Pole Laughing Laughing

How far north do you want to go? the obvious recommendations are Beijing and Dalian. But you could also consider Harbin, which is cold, but it's suppose to be nice in winter. Also the mandarin spoken in Harbin is apparently the clearest in all of China.

well it seems like you are all comedians I'm not allowed to be one apparently. and maybe Harbin being a bit too cold for my aging joints in winter is not a good idea

Still go with Dalian. Cleaner, friendlier, better restaurandts (with bathrooms with western seats and toilet paper, some semblance of culture.

Dalian!

Smaller cities can be really nice. I live in Zhangye, Gansu province, a city of only around 100,000. In my experience the best food in China, and the people are quite nice. Perhaps average on cleanliness, but completely without pollution. It's remote and not too Westernized but that's what I like. I met a teacher working in Xi'an and he liked it, and other than the pollution I enjoyed the few days I spent there. Yinchuan in Ningxia seemed like a quite pleasant and overlooked place when I was there.
