Hello there,

I'm new to Dave's cafe and even newer to HCT. I'm wondering if since it's governmental, it's included in the 70% pay increase??

Yeah, just like the 15% increase HCT was supposed to be included in 3 years ago Shocked

Don't hold your breath - the VC believes HCT faculty should be paying for the privilege to work there. Besides, you just got in with a pseudo 12% increase (effective Aug 2007), don't be greedy.

The only way HCT will be included is if someone higher up the food chain (i.e. Sheikh Mohammed) says they will be.

The latest I heard on payrises here is as follows:
the 70% is end of January and Sheikh Mohamed has pushed
it through
it includes the education sector
people who have been here less than a year won't get it
the UAEU 25% should be end of November

You might find window guards to stop the flying pigs from getting in at Ace Hardware, but I doubt if Carrefour has such specialist equipment.

Ha ha, that's a good one, really.
You'll find these announcements amount more to a PR exercise than anything else. People will still be waiting for this to kick mid-2008.
And, no, HCT expats will not be included. Helenl may be right, but it's not only the VC who thinks we're paid enough, it's the guy above.

4 into 70 goes 17.5 times

(4 = the 4% pay raise HCTers now get each year, 70 = what the office workers with HCT diplomas got)

Does that mean the guys who work in the government offices (when they're not chatting on their mobiles) are 17.5 times harder working and more productive than over-delivering HCT teachers?

will we get the 70% if they stick 350 students in our classes (that's 17.5 * 20) or work 700 hours a week (that's 40hrs * 17.5)

HCTers will get 70% if they stick around until May 2025 (that's 17 years and 6 months from now)

ouch!! So ultimatly it's a lot of fluff? Also, if it does trickle down in whatever way...will the new hires eventually catch up or do they get their 4% increase at best?

new hires and long timers - we all get 4%now. You should have come a few years ago - we got 6% then but I guess they have to make cuts wherever they can to give the government workers their 70%

Weird...so HCT isn't 'government'? Sounds like they'll have a hell of a time recruiting/retaining teachers from now on. Those interviewing potential candidates at TESOL Arabia in March should be able to put their feet up and relax for 4 days!

Well... there are "government employees" and "government employees" - so according to your contract you are, but... in certain situations... like raises, suddenly you are not.

I was reading about the raise in the Al Khaleej newspaper - note that the minister of education is not the minister of higher education (which HCT falls under).

Note also, HCT did NOT get the 25% increase that is mentioned in the article. The ministry of education (not higher education) has been experiencing problems with Emiratis resigning or otherwise moving out of the front line education system - primary and secondary - because of "low pay" - they'll get the raise. However, I won't hold my breath for them either - I'll believe it when I see it happen.

What happened last time is that HCTers were told by the then VC that "sure, we work under the umbrella of the Ministry of Higher Ed, so we are federal government employees and are eligible for the raise". He was fired and then we all figured out that our checks are signed by the HCT not by the MoHE. Hence we are only quasi-federal government employees and not eligible for the raise. Only those who actually work in the Ministry of Higher Education and not it's little sister schools got the raise. At the time of the first universal raise the MLI teachers got it because they were direct employees of the Army. It lasted for a few months, then everyone was transferred into CERT/HCT where their new found raises were written out of their contracts. Nice move TK!

But let's hope for the best this time. Back then oil was only up at $60 a barrel. Now that it is $90 maybe the spirit of giving will kick in.

When teachers with bachelors they got from a cornflake packet are going to get a whole lot more sooner rather than later, it's hard to be at HCT with a masters and expected by those higher up to work your guts out for the possibility of a 2% bonus sometime in 2008-09 Laughing
