It's kind of 'Chinese'. Whereas the rest of Shanghai ain't. It should be cheap though! And, if you don't get fed up with peasants staring at you 24/7, fun.

Why not? I'd give it a go. I wanted to live in one of those two storey communities in Shanghai, but I was refused permission. Actually, they took one look at me and told me to get lost...

Have u said yes yet? The later you leave the job placement the more money will be on offer, but u may not be able to pick the city. I got one in Hangzhou the other day which was most attractive not least of all the salary of 9000Y but I had to be there by the 28th of Dec'. Shanghai is great to vist for a weekend, I'm not sure if I want to live there.
Zhu nin hao yun (good luck anyway).

It's a little different from the other districts and much less-developed, but you're well within the city so you can enjoy all the amenities. Rents may be cheaper. I've seen plenty of schools around there, but very few foreigners, so you'll likely have no problem finding jobs.

This may be off-topic but in Shanghai's history they had a 'lower corner' and an 'upper corner' of the city. One was richer and more developed, the other was more backward. I can't remember which was upper and lower, but the French Concessions area had a lot going for it.

Nowadays, the 'lower corner' or the SW corner of Shanghai is very well off and prosperous, most notably XuJiaHui. Opposite is the 'upper corner' which happens to be YangPu District. The Pearl Line goes from one corner to the other, so if you take it, you can notice the differences.

It should come as no surprise that Shanghai people compare themselves favorably with other residents in the PRC. But what is surprising is that this also happens WITHIN the city. The locals would say that a person living in XuHui District or Xintiandi is more 'Shanghainese' than someone in YangPu District.
