I thought I'd seen it all this past summer when the DF city government opened beaches in this town, sitting at 2400 m elevation.

But now they've come up with something even more inane.

They are going to to turn the Zocalo into an ice skating rink. A giant ice skating rink.

I heard the story from someone here and thought they were just being silly. Went down today to the Zocalo and sure enough, all the fixings and equipment are out there as they construct the last thing I would ever expect to see here.

Here's the news story. I'll post photos in the next weeks on this as I strap on the blades.

How they will keep the ice from becoming a slushy mess is a mystery to me.

Me too. I know back home in the summer months the indoor rinks have trouble keeping quality ice because of the temperatures. How, with that many people on it and the day time temperatures, they plan on doing it will be a feat I can hardly wait to see!

My biggest question though is: Will there be a zamboini???

i believe they opened that famous ice rink in new york in close to 80 degree(f) weather this year, it was basically slush but people were still out and...slushing?

i imagine this is going to be hilarious to see and that i am going to try very, very hard to drag my boyfriend there.

I wonder how many Chilangos even know how to ice skate or own ice skates?

Apparently, they'll be renting or loaning out skates and even providing lockers to keep shoes in.

There are two or three rinks in Mexico City where people can skate. There's even a hockey league in the country. I've been to the rink at San Jeronimo for public skates and while most chilangos there rented hideous looking uniplastic skates, there were a few figure skaters who had the right equipment and knew what they were doing.

I would love to! But, I no longer have the road hockey gear I brought from Canada years back. The city probably wouldn't let us out there with sticks and masks anyway.

My offspring started with a roller hockey team in Villa Coapa and now also plays ice hockey at San Jer�nimo. If we had stayed in Canada, she probably never would have had the opportunity to stand out as a good player; here the whole sport is so small that pretty much every hockey player is a big fish in a very small pond.

My husband saw this on TV over the weekend and for the past three days he's been asking me constantly, so when are we going to go ice skating?

6hrs each way to skate--no thanks!
