Does anyone own a Car in Jakarta?. I heard that as a foreigner, you cannot own a Car in your name. Is this true?. |

This is an urban myth which may even have been true in the past. Get an Indo driving licence (SIM) and show them your KITAS and the vehicle can be yours. I've done it myself.
The domicile regulations for getting a driving licence are the same as for registering a car, although in practice you just buy a SIM, so waft the ID at them and let them smell the cash and I promise you the car will be registered to you.
A good car dealer with a contact at the traffic police (SAMSAT) will have a black number plate on the car in 3-4 days. |

Hi...I thought the same thing but last June I bought one of the new Terios cars, pretty nice and they had no problem putting in my name even with a 2 year credit payment plan...
Cheers!

I can think of a few FT's in Indo that have bought new cars over the last year or so. Why should it be so odd? |

I bought a car (used) 2 years ago. just gave my paperwork and a copy of my KITAS to the local biro jasa (person that helps with govt. paperork), and within 5 days i got my STNK. 2 weeks later i got my blue book (owners book). I paid the taxes (actually printed on the STNK and blue book) plus about 250,000 rp for the biro jasa's time. yearly renewal, tax plus 60,000. doing it the first time requires them to go to the one in west jkt, and involves a lot more things, including verifiying the motor and chasis numbers.
earlier this year, I bought a new motorcycle. gave the dealership a copy of my KITAS and within 2 weeks i have the STNK. a couple weeks later i had my owners book. all this was included in the purchase price.
to buy and register a vehicle. u only need a KITAS, not a license (SIMS).
in june, i went to to drivers license place. EASIEST thing i have ever done in Indo. rolled up there at 11. plenty of helpful people to direct me. 10,000rp for an eye exam. then waited for the result. directed to the next window where i got the forms for the drivers licenses. i got both the car and motorcycle licenses. each one cost 75,000 for new license and 65,000 for renewal. then u are directed to window 18/19. this is the only place where u have to pay a bribe, pretty organized for indonesia. guess u could make a stand and refuse to pay, but hardly worth the effort as he only want 150,000 for both. showed him my license from my home country, but my friend didnt have one. price was the same. then off to get you photo taken and wait for the license to me made. out the door at 11:35. total for 2 licenses was 310,000 and 35 minutes of my time. no driving test.
i have had bule friends pay from 500,000 to 1 million for 1 license using an agent. absolutely not needed. easiest thing i have ever done. if u need any help with anything, PM me. |

I agree that getting a SIM in Jakarta (Samsat Daan Mogot) is very user friendly these days. I did it last November and paid 350ribu which is broadly in line with the previous poster. I didn't use a biro jasa as I can understand enough BI to do all the forms.
The year before I went to a police HQ in Tangerang and used the 'VIP process' which cost about the same and involved me drinking coffee with the Komandan for 15 mins while they printed the card.
Agents charging 1 mill per licence category are simply rip-off merchants. |

just to clarify........ i paid 150 for my SIMS car. paid 150 for my SIMS motorcycle. and 10,000 for eye exam. Total for both= 310,000.
i only use a biro jasa to renew my STNK. costs me 60,000 and they do it while i am at work. well worth the money. |

do u need a sims or stnk? sims= drivers license STNK= vehicle regristration. for a sims you dont need a biro jasa, just go the the drivers license admin building (look at malu's post for address). it is near citraland mall, not far from the airport of taman angrek mall.
if u just bought the bike, you will need to change the owners book to your name as well as get an STNK for your motorcycle. best to use a biro jasa in your neighborhood as it will make the passing of documents easier. ask someone at your office to refer one or just walk around your neighborhood. many houses will have little "biro jasa" signs attached to their houses. just give them the paperwork and they will do the rest. u dont have to give them any money up front. u will have to pay whatever taxes they paid plus whatever fee they charge. find out this in advance. renewing is very easy and the cost is usually around 60,000 rp. getting your name on the owners book is a bit more time consuming so doing that plus the stnk usually runs about 2-400,000 in addition to the taxes and other fees. |

just how much are the dealerships willing to nego with the sticker prices of their cars? i didn't nego with my shogun and the van i have was a purchase from a neighbor of mine who went "over credit" after 2 months. (dumba$$)....anyway, this will be my first new car purchase ( on credit, of course) and i am a bit ignorant as to what i should actually expect to pay.... price listed as approx 165jt.
....please keep in mind that i realize all dealerships are different.... i am merely looking for ballpark figures here. |

The car I was looking at was about 165jt as well... (something like a toyota Avanza)... we were told the repayments were about 4 million a month that was a few months back now (almost middle of last year) .... |

I renew every year my SIM in Dan Moggot, do everything myself, it's about 3 steps process, and done for 75,000. Of course during the process the official tried to get some money but donb't be shy to tell them 'i paid ALREADY'
Good luck |
