Hey everyone,
Our parents are visiting for CNY and we want to take them somewhere nice....we'll show them Taipei and all that, but want also wanted to show them some nature....
We've read that Taroko Gorge is insanely crowded at that time of the year...is that true? Any other suggestions (keeping the crowd and winter weather in mind)?
Any recommendations you have would be great!
Thanks! |

Traffic is insane at chinese new year, Taipei becomes a ghost town as people return to their parents/grandparents/wives homes.
Many places are closed (think christmas) and road congestion over the 3 to 4 days is crasy.
If travelling by train make sure you have the tickets and seats sorted when they go on sale (normally 4 days before travel)
Hotels, spa's etc will be choke a bloc, even resteraunts are booked heavily in advance for company parties. Govt buildings are closed etc so if they are coming make sure you check the places you want to take them will b e open, have space.
If they are coming for a short break (5 or 6 days) I would suggest another time of the year. |

CNY is the WORST time to do any travel in Taiwan. Everything is more expensive than usual, more crowded, and traffic all over the island is insane.
If you don't have your plans booked already, you may already be out of luck, but you better book stuff fast.
Many things also close during CNY, so you may want to check that out as well. |

| Some great advice already been given. Get them to fly in a few days later or ideally a month or so later when the climate shall pick up. By March there's some great weather in Taiwan. |

I have been to Taroko several times during CNY. It was quiet and peaceful.
I hope this helps.
