Did not the people of that region compare it to disaster in the Third world? |
Yes, they did, 007. Comparing one's homeland with a third world country doesn't, however, make your place of birth a third world country.
BTW, I was led to believe that countries such as Kuwait and KSA were considered ''second world'' since they had wealth, infrastructure etc. but still lacked many of the positive aspects of the developed world, e.g. free press, literacy, equality of the sexes, suffrage, beer etc. etc. |

Although I am guilty of using these terms as they have been around since I was in school, I thought that they were no longer used in academia... not 'politically correct' so to speak. Through the years, they have obviously become more and more meaningless for differentiation.
Wikipedia talks some about the controversy of the term.

Thanks for the suggestion but I've already had a close look at London and think it's marvellous. My Spanish students love it. |

Not that it matters here, but:
current != voltage |

Where we are in Eastern Province we have dual voltage - BOTH 220v and 110v ! |
No, you have 110 and 240. The outlets that are designed to take a 110 or a 220 plug will only give you 110 power- you can see this is the fact with you hair dryer or vacuum- if they are 220, they will run slow and cool.
The larger outlet with the triangular slits is a 240. Use this on some of your appliances with just a plug adaptor and you will burn up the appliances.
I have yet to see a true 220. If your appliance (hairdryer or vacuum) is not too sensitive, use the 240 outlet, with an adaptor and it will work much better. |

I found that my electric jug and iron work fine at 110, the jug is a little slow but not unbearably so, the iron heats up in a couple of minutes. The only thing that didn't work was a battery charger for my camera batteries and beard trimmer. It said Charged but the batteries ran flat in about 5 photos and the trimmer didn't work at all. I bought a small step-up transformer and it works fine. When I tried it with the jug smoke came out of the transformer, but I turned it off and let it cool down and no damage was done.
If I see an adaptor for the monster plug on the stove I might get that, otherwise I'll leave things as is.
Thanks for all the electrical and other advice. |
