Hi,

I am considering Japan.
I was just offered a position by a school called ACC in Nagoya. Anyone heard of it, or familiar with the city?
They are only offering 230,000 though, airfare reimbursed in the middle and end of the contract. Is this a bit low? I am not sure what the average salary for teachers is. I have worked in Korea for almost 2 years so i'm not COMPLETELY new to teaching. I just want to make sure I pick a decent contract. Would I actually save anything on this?

Thanks!
Dawn

How many hours a week will you be working? 250,000yen used to be the minimum standard wage for an entry level ESL position in Japan but that has dropped in recent years thanks largely to Nova. The fact that your airfare will be reimbursed is pretty good, just make sure it is written in your contract somewhere. 230,000 is quite low for anything above 25 hours a week but if it's a good company then stick with it and find private lessons to supplement your income.

Last month, it was down to a couple of onigiri and bottle of green tea for one hour.

Do they make copayments into your health insurance plan?

Do they pay anything for your rent?

As Wintermute asked, what are your hours? Be specific about your required classroom time, plus any other duties in the office (and whether you are even required to be in the office whether you are working in a classroom or not).

I assume they pay your commuting fees.

Yes, that is a bit low, but a few more financial details are needed for me to answer thoroughly. Recently, some employers have offered less than the previous standard of 250,000.

I admire you for holding out for that second onigiri; things are definitely looking up Wink

You could survive on that much, but you won't save much unless you stay at home a lot.
