HCT salaries went up 12% before annual bonuses dropped to 4%...also there is the possiblity for all staff to get an additional 4% at their supervisor's discretion so in fact anyone can get up to an 8% annual increment. Housing allowances went up almost 40,000dhs...still not market rate granted but better than nothing.

no, there was no 12% raise - there used to be a 6% annual increment for those not topping the pay scale - hct decided to offer it's first global raise in 7 years last year of 6% and lumped it with the annual increment, so people thought the actual raise was really 12% but that included the 6% increment anyway, so the real actual raise was really just 6%

Not everyone can get the discretionary 4% - there's only enough money in the pot for half the staff to get it - half/most won't get it - all depends on hoop-jumping

as for housing - some of my colleagues now have to pay to top up the accommodation allowance out of their own pocket - things are changing - housing used to be free so the 40,000 increase you talk about isn't really relevant

I also save money here and have a good life. I also have my nest egg and want to stay and am not interested in resigning - some people like to put words in your mouth - it was much better a few years ago before western/5-star tourist prices hit us and inflation outstripped salaries, and will be not so good from now if we get just the 4% raise.

No whining here - just a few facts and sorting out a few misunderstandings about the 12% - this is a board for people to tell things as they are now - if if happens to be negative, it isn't whining - it's just true. not sure I give a damn about prices in my home country - bringing that into the argument is n't so relevant - this is abut the UAE

Although several people currently living in the US seem unduly bothered by perceived 'whining' from teachers in the UAE, this appears to be a fairly sensible summing up of the issue.

The sad thing is you sound like so many of my colleagues...I'm not whining, just stating facts.... yet, i dont see any positive facts only negative. Yes, HCT hasn't given a payrise for a while but that's because the salary was pretty good to start with. Yes the payrise was "only 6%" but I didn't see it mentioned on any of your previous correspondence when you were "stating facts" about the annual increment changing from 6 to 4%.

Stating negative facts in the absence of any positive ones is still whining in my book.

As housecat stated earlier, this board is a source of information for those perhaps thinking of coming to the UAE. Therefore it is the responsiblity of those of us here in the UAE to give a balanced account of what goes on...I agree that the money isn't as good as it was and that management and students can be difficult but there are many more positive things that make this part of the world a great place to live and work.

It's a great time to be here in the UAE...the country is growing, exciting developments are around every corner and I am making a real difference in the lives of my students and through them, the development of this country. These are the "facts" I choose to focus on.
