I'm sure glad I was able to get permanent residence a couple of years ago while the getting was good. I can now come and go inside and outside of Russia as I please, no need for a visa, can work without a work permit, about the only thing I can not do is vote since I'm not a Russian citizen. I came to Moscow 5 years ago and pretty much have not left except to go home to the US for a month or around Europe. Don't ask me how I got permanent residence, but I have it and that sure has taken care of a lot of wrries I see others here having.

Totally agree , I've just received my temporary residency in my passport this evening, so I'm celibrating yet again. Because it's now in my hand.

But can I ask you a question? On temporary residency is it true there is a new law that states we still need an invitation from a school and we can't be employed by any schools we wish?

Not that it bothers me personally, as I'm going for entrepeneurs license.

about the new laws since I no longer have to worry about it, but I think it depends on the type of temporary residence you have, if your married to a Russian citizen, I think you may be exempt from the work permits, but I think it depends on what type of temporary residence you have.

Well, I'm married and a Brit. I thought there was only one type of residency. Although if you are CIS it may well be different. The other type of residency is the illegal one, that is not the one I haven't got. If you got your residency quickly from an agency quickly. BEWARE! The real one is the one you do yourself by applying through OVIR.

Refer to expat.ru forums on residency. Some very informative and accurate info on residency and Business visas.
