Try Chinese uni students most have taken 8 yrs of grammer from some one who doesn't speak english.
Here is a case in point not a student but my best friend. I said look at the dolls he said they are dulls I said no they are dolls. He said my english teacher in high school said it was pronounced dulls. Who speaks english here I said. You do says he, teacher was wrong.
Really this guy was very western in his thought so it wasn't a problem to say the above to him but it might be to other people.

Maybe it was American English. They would say something akin to 'dulls'.

Not in the 3 American states I lived in!

I met my best friend, a native speaker of Mandarin, after he'd been in the States about three years. His English was quite rough, although he'd studied it a lot in northern China. Ten years later, he's great at English!
