Hi All,
I a 45 year old male. I'm between jobs in Korea and have a month to kill. I will arrive on 12/29. I plan on booking a place at random just to have a place to stay as I'll probably arrive late. I'll book it for a few days to get the feel for the area. Then maybe find a more reasonable place to stay longer.
I'd like to find a comfortable place as a base and not travel thoughout the country, at least this time. Any suggestion on places to stay from getting off the plane to the next location? I'd like a place with a western style bathroom and aircon. I would lalso like to bring my laptop or is that a bad idea (theft)!
Thanks for your help! |

hey cubs,
we are close in age, me being a few years your jr.
what kind of action are you looking for? temples, markets, women? and in what area of thailand do you want to stay? be a little more specific and i can probably help you more.
if it's the girlie scene you want i can absolutely advise you on this. have spent many months mongering in thailand and have a good grasp of the good, the bad, and the ugly. |

I would like to try all of the above. He he! I really don't have any expectations. I know there are many different places with different experiences, but since I have no experience, anything will do. The easier the better. Your suggestions are more than welcome! I'll bring about $3,000 USD but will have backup. |

$3000.00 for one month in thailand is going to have you sitting pretty. i recommend that you spend 3 or 4 days in bangkok. see a couple of temples, china town, khao san road, chatuchak market, ride the skytrain.
i recommend that you stay at the nana hotel if this is your first visit. it's an old throwback from the vietnam era, not to mention it's right across the street from the nana entertainment plaza. this place is full of beer bars and gogo bars. hundreds of girls working in there, all wanting to give you a good time. spend a night or two at nana, you'll be glad you did.
gotta go to soi cowboy. just tell the taxi driver soi cowboy. more gogos and beer bars loaded with hotties.
patpong is another entertainment district but i don't recommend it. might be cool to just check it out but it's getting shabby.
o-k, you've done the markets, china town, khao san road, a temple or two, nana, and soi cowboy.
YIPPIE!!! now the fun is about to begin. pack your bags and taxi over to the ekamai bus terminal and buy a ticket to pattaya. bus ride is about 2 hours. once in pattaya offer a baht bus driver 100 (be firm) baht to privately take you to the penthouse hotel, about 25.00 30.00 USD per night. stay at the penthouse for a few nights. for these first few days i recommend perusing the streets of pattaya where you'll get a good feel for the place and seek out a less expensive hotel for the duration of your trip. my trips are usually 2-3 months long and i rent an apartment so i really can't recommend any hotels. i know the penthouse because i stayed there on my first trip to pattaya. hundreds of hotels though.
more to come later on........ |

BTSskytrain, thanks for the schedule. It's just what I need. I'm in Chicago now for the holidays and plan to arrive 12/29 or 30. I will go to Korea or Qingdao, China in Feb. I will have a friend mail my clothes to me once I decide. However I want to bring my laptop with me because I will not be returning to Chicago. Will that be a problem or is there a way to secure it?
I really appreciate your time! |

no problem securing the laptop. i am almost sure that the nana hotel has a safety deposit box and am positive that the penthouse has one. regarding your laptop hard drive, be careful when going through customs and immigration. they have been known to search laptops for questionable material (kiddie porn and the like). i am not suggesting that this is your cup of tea as it certainly isn't mine. but, if there is something that might be in question you might want to launder it. |

I booked a flight for 12/30. the agent couldn't find info on the Nana Hotel. Is there another name you would recommend or can I just catch a taxi from the airport and tell him Nana Hotel? What is the name of the area? Thanks again!!! |

yeah, just tell the taxi driver to take you to the nana hotel, soi nana at sukhumvit. they all know this place like the back of their hands. their is a disco inside the nana hotel with plenty of ladies and as i mentioned prior, the nana entertainment plaza is right across the street.
something else that might be of interest. there is a beer bar just outside of the nana. grab a barstool along the rail facing the street and spend the evening (between 4 o p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) just watching the hundreds of girls walking into work. great way to spend an evening sipping some cold suds.
have a blast!! |

would be great having a few beers but unfortunately i'm in the states right now helping a friend open a new business. probably won't get back to asia until next summer. one thing's for sure, you won't be starved for company in thailand. company is going to FIND YOU! HA!
PS: you can make reservations at the nana via the internet. just google nana hotel bangkok to find the website. if they are all booked up then just post that here and i'll give you some decent alternatives. |

I did stay at Nana Hotel before. It is a dump. Unless you want to 'sleaze it' then yes-stay there.
I would recommend Dynasty Hotel -they have a new wing, on the same street or Majestic on the main road and on the way to the skytrain. Both places will cost about $35-40/night- not sure exactly since the US$ has tanked.
With your bankroll you can live like a King for a month. |

and i definitely recommend that you sleaze it for a night or two, simply for nostalgia sake. ha.
i agree that the dynasty hotel is also a very good choice though and with kent's consummate list you really can't miss. |

It never hurts to have choices; when it comes to hotels, Bangkok has it all.
Just so nobody thinks I'm a prude, I've walked past Nana Hotel many, many times.
Like BTSskytrain says - it's a great place to sit outside on a barstool watching people walk by.
I've added Majestic Suites to the hotel list; it looks good for 1,315 Baht - thank you for that, hokulea. |
