A hangover cure. I guess not drinking would help.
If anyone swears by any remedies. Let me know. Please. Quick. |

Hi
Help is at hand ,firstly for future reference remember to drink milk before to line the stomach and reduce the effects of all that falling down stuff. I have found that just a moderate amount of what you had the previous evening can ease things off a tad ,but,if you had a lot and mixed it a bit then not such a good idea. A good fry up is another if you can stomach that or if the very thought makes you want to throw up then try that too it helps, er, a little. Rehydrating is another way drink plenty of water and if you can go for a swim or take a hot bath that eases things as well . A strong headache pill is always another option . İf your guts are in less than a perfect state try 2 or 3 raw eggs in tomato juice and down the lot in one gulp whatever happens after that you will feel better if it stays down the gutrot will stop and if it doesn't you will still feel better . So happy hang over and repeat NEVER again 5 times and just regard this as a practise run for New Year Yippiee ,I know I will . |

I now lead a righteous life and abstain from bevearge alcohol. In the bad old days my patent cure for hangover was a pickled gherkin.
Alkaseltzer was also useful.
Sometimes I went back to the bottle and started again.
Being sober is better. |

It is far better to look at prevention rather than cure as far as a hangover goes. In order to prevent:
1.) Rule of thumb: Drink light coloured alcohol...Vodka, Gin, etc. Dark alcohol is full of congeners (byproducts produced by fermentation), and these cause the classic hangover effects much more than actual alcohol. There are exceptions to this rule though, for instance Sake is light coloured but absolutely full of congeners (hence the terrible hangovers)
2.) Eat a protein rich meal before drinking. Protein slows the absorption of alcohol, and actually helps with alcohol metabolism.
3.) Take a B vitamin complex before drinking.
4.) Drink an electrolyte replacement drink before bed. Here in Japan I have a bottle of Pocari Sweat or Amino Supli.
If you wake up with a hangover, there is only one scientifically proven remedy...drink more alcohol. You can drink a gallon of water, take all the vitamins in the world, and that hangover isn't going anywhere. To make a long, boring scientific pathway a little less long/boring, the congeners I was talking about are metabolized by a family of enzymes called Cytochrome P450 (usually just called CYP). These help to metabolize alcohol as well. After a night of drinking, your CYP enzymes are completely spent and they become deactivated. If you wake up and have a beer, the alcohol reactivates the CYP enzymes, which metabolize any remaining congeners and alcohol. "The Hair of the Dog" is actually the best way to get rid of a hangover, believe it or not.
This can be difficult to do. After a night of drinking, I almost gag just looking at a beer, but the next time you have a hangover have a beer or two (preferably light coloured) and I guarantee you'll feel much better. |

Hair of the dog is often a good way to POSTPONE the hangover. It's all too easy to get drunk again since you still have a fair amount of alcohol in your system. Incidentally, as little as a tablespoon of ginger ale/ginger beer in a beer in the morning makes it go down MUCH easier. |

My breakfast on Christmas Day was orange juice, coffee and neurofen, closely followed by communion. Not recommended!
Bloody Mary is good as it provides the HOTD, liquid, vitamin C and a certain oomph. A good recipe is: one generous shot of vodka, lime juice, Worcester sauce, tobasco, celery salt, black pepper, ice and tomato juice. |

Renounce the Demon Drink. You will then not get hangovers.
That took me 30 years to learn. |

Richard ame,
I applaud the amount of reasearch you have done in this field, such dedication.
I take the hangover as part of the package, just to make me think twice, before doing it again |

| I drink several glasses of water followed by a few aspirin after a night of binge-drinking. This usually does the trick for me. If not, one can always go for a "bloody bud" in the morning. Basically, a "bloody bud" is tomato juice and your beer of choice mixed together. Sound repulsive? It is, but it gets the job done, and you will feel better in a flash! |

just had to join in here as i'm presently self-medicating a
bad head and throat cold with vodka and water. i'm in the internet cafe and it looks innocuous!
was drinking plum brandy at home.
first, be born Irish, i very seldom get hangovers, and boy do i drink. the scientific dissertation was very good.
don't forget you get what you pay for ( yes you teetotalers can read this your way ) if you drink quality you feel quality.
also, my father told me when i was young "don't mix your liquor
with carbonated drinks". it gets into your blood stream faster
and all the sugar, caffeine and chemicals aren't good for you.
he also told me that he rarely drank less than twenty ounces a day of rye since he got out of the war- he was a rye and water man.
back when i had a real job making real money i used to drink good Irish whiskey- straight, and just had trouble waking up the next morning because the alarm clock would send to a place i didn't want to go.
to sign off, quoting my hero W.C.Fields,
" The only cure for a hangover is to not stop drinking."
all my best to the non-imbibers, one less set of elbows i have to contend with at the bar. |
