Do any Americans or, possibly, DOS/school owners have any recommendations on TEFL schools located in the US?
Understand, I am not asking about online programs but valid, 110+ hour programs with a practicum involving real student contacts which results in a TEFL certificate. |

Nobody tried these schools back home before coming over? Surprising. Any of you know anything about the Global outfit? Or maybe the Canadian schools? Don't a couple of the big chains have TEFL school locations in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal? |

Global Tesol doesn't offer a real teaching component.
Not so many people take such a course in their home countries because of the many advantages of getting certified in the country where you want to start teaching. |

check with the local community college or university, the former being significantly cheaper, as you may already know. They usually offer Linguistics courses and I'm sure that they would be more than happy to find you a volunteer position somewhere as part of some kind of practicum; that's where you pay to work. |

There is a course in Denver called Bridge Linguatec (or similar). I briefly considered it until I learned via this forum that studying where I want to work is better. I never pursued the local school, but I do know they offer both the CELTA and a TEFL certificate. |

Might help to know where you live...
You're asking about Canadian locations but initially asked about the USA. Where the heck are ya? |

Oh, I am in Kyiv. But a buddy was inquiring about some of the TEFL programs here and those available in the US (Northeast area Philadelphia area). That seems reasonable since I doubt any country has anything larger than the ESL/EFL program infrastructure as the US school system. The catch would be that the American system is geared to turn out fully certified teachers in either elementary or secondary education and ESL is usually selected as a specialization after you decide which level you will do. Linguistics as a degree specialization is not very common. Teachers that take a 4 year program go to work making $30-40K for 10 months work, so they (mostly) arent wandering around the world. Personally, I did my training at TEFL Worldwide in Prague and learned a lot, but he was wondering about doing the program there to help hold down the costs of the training. That way he would have more of a cushion for his initial travel and job search. The things I have heard and witnessed about many of the schools over here led me to wonder how DOS's and/or school owners view the ESL schools back in our home countries. I have heard solid things about a couple of TEFL programs in Prague, but the quality of many of the TESOL, TEFL and CELTA programs seems to be hit or miss in most other areas. In particular, being dependent on the "job guarantee" several of them offer seems to be a bit shaky. |
