See Johnslats post above, where he mentions Chu Lai, Vietnam-- i have to presume he was there on the congressional payroll and not as a tourist!
personally, i had three christmases in Southeastasia myself, but they were all pretty tolerable. the worst i ever had was in cambridge england five or six years ago which i spent with some rather hippyesque strangers, though having said that it was very good of them to invite me.
all grooviest--- and merry xmas again to all and anon out there!!

Dear khmerhit,
Thanks for the photos - I was there in 1965 and 1966, on, as you put it, the congressional payroll. We pretty much set up the base when I arrived, including the lovely job of laying the Marston matting for the runway in the summer. And the summers there are extremely hot. I recognized some of the sites in the pictures, but others were new to me. Probably added after my unscheduled departure in February of '66 on a medevac flight to Japan. Lovely country and lovely people - at least the ones who weren't shooting at us, that is. And I can't really say I blame them for doing so. I'd have done the same, I think, if a half-million of so Vietnamese military had suddenly occupied Los Angeles. Well, on second thought, I might have let them have L.A.
Regards,
John |
