Hi everyone,

I'm interested to know how much one can earn working full-time at a private language institute in the Boston area. I have my MA in TESOL and five years teaching experience in the U.S. (community colleges) and abroad (private language academies). Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

With your qualifications, you should definitely be able to find work in a community college or even university extension program. There are IEP schools in Boston too like EF and LSI but I'm not sure the pay is up to par for someone with your credentials.

The biggest issue with TESOL in the U.S. seems to be the lack of need for full- time teachers unless you are a certified teacher in a public school. So many teach between schools finding hours wherever they can.
Full time jobs with benefits can be hard to come by outside the public school sector.

I worked in San Diego while doing my M.A. in TESOL and I was really lucky to only be teaching at one school. However, I was laid off during a slow season for about 6 weeks since I wasn't full time and on salary.

I'd seriously suggest looking into a place like Boston College and other schools like it with an ESL extension program. I'll be doing the same thing myself in a few years when I return to the U.S... just not in Boston.

Good luck!
