Hi all - this is my first post here at eslcafe.com. I decided to post straight up here becasue of a few years experience teaching English as well as about fifteen years living in-out of Asia.
I'm thinking about having a look at China beyond HKG/MAC. I don't need to get wealthy, but I don't work for free. I need to kill a few years before returning stateside. I have a few years teaching ESL and about a decade training in IT.
1. Could anyone tell me the salary/package I could expect with the following experience: 47yo white male, American, BA (top uni), background in I.T. (10 yrs) applications, support, training and project mgt. I had taught a spotty two years of English on/off since 1994. I have a TEFL Cert from 95 @ 40hrs. I also have lots of public speaking in school/business.
2. What are the honest possibility of getting work in Sichuan or Yunnan (Nanning?) at 4,500-5,500 + package with above qualifications? I come from California and living in South East Asia I do not take the cold well at all. I am also hopelessly addicted to mindblowing hot Thai foods.
3. Should I fly in, look around and have my visa swapped out for a Z after finding work OR...should I hook up with a school over the Internet (at least for the first year). I will have an annual physical in Thailand anyway(fyi). Would I have to leave China and return with the Z? That would not make it cost effective at all. I am sure we are all aware of the pos-negs but from purely a cost point of view - what is your opinion being a better option first year? I don't want to end up with a bad employer.
4. I will take the boards standard advice and shun recruiters (Angelina's [looks like some decent jobs though]). Can anyone speak to authenticity of these boards? http://en.chinatefl.com/ and http://www.tefl.cc/ any others?
5. More and more schools are asking for English certificates. Assuming I would even want to do one, it hardly seems one would ever get a roi (same as Thailand) at us1000+ a go. More neccessary than ever or just part of a schools wish list?
6. When sending scanned documents is it neccessary to watermark the docs and perhaps remove your name or what?? I had read of all sorts of mischief.
7. Can anyone give me some basic advice on teaching at a uni (my first choice, low hours + fat Internet connetion), private school (better money. more hours). I had some really bad experiences with Korean hogwans. Im leaning toward a uni as its state enterprise and less likely to screw me.
*comments on a very independent 47yo foreign male living on a campus?
8. What is the best time to look to a job to start for spring? What is the best time to look to a job to start for fall?
9. Resume: detailed and clever OR simply stated and to the point? Cover letter, use one? half page, simple statement or a list of your talents and magic?
That will certainly get me pointed in the right direction. Many, Many thanks. |

Nanning is the capital of Guangxi. But more importantly, what currency are we talking? Nearly anyone from high school graduate up could get that in Renmimbi.
Independent 47 yo male? Been there. There may well be some restrictions, mostly implicit, regarding relationships and public sobriety. Also, many places will have curfews. Main gates and buildings [including yours] may be locked at what you consider unreasonable times.
These things aside, on campus housing is generally a good deal. It saves money and time, and provides a degree of security. |

eslstudies: Yes, Nanning is not in Yunnan, also city not province -hence the parens. RMB of course. Yeah, anyone that is breathing can make 5500 a month (in Yunnan??) so it is said; but when I look at all the job postings in locations such as Anda so so kindly pointed to (weeks ago) they all show about 3-4K and a rare 5, especially in these areas mentioned. Or the job smells fishy or requires "female only". Anyway, seems all uni jobs force you to take on campus housing. I dont plan on coming back to the flat completely lushed at 3am with a hooker on each arm, but do need some space one would afford adults. Thanks.
anda: Question never was how to use Google. |

I'd recommend to all teachers that they never live in supplied campus housing. Paying a few extra kuai for your own place will make you much happier in the long run. Once you accept their housing, you may be subject to rules meant for students, surveillance, insufferable noise levels and visits or requests during your off time.

On campus housing is not always bad. Demand a key to the gate and there will be fewer problems regarding comings and goings.
A lot of unis. are now being built in the middle of nowhere. There are four here in the countryside where I live. Make sure you know exactly where your campus is located.
Not all unis. are state enterprises. The top schools are a lot more picky about who they hire, so you may be looking at working at second or third tier schools.
The best advice is to talk to someone who currently works there AND someone who no longer works there. You can compare the answers and make your own decision. I would also take into consideration the ratio of teachers who stay for a second year.
I don't know about the English certs. Most school are requesting experience or TESOL/TEFL. Knowing English and teaching English are two different things. Your experience is one of your better selling points.
Hooking up with a school over the Internet is not a bad thing in China. Just make sure you do your homework first. I've done it both ways. In reality, there are cheap ways to do a boarder crossing to convert your visa. They are time consuming, but not overly expensive. (especially if you are in Yunan)
Sorry I answered your questions out of order and did not have an answer for all of them. Honestly though, these are only my opinions. You have to make a choice the best fits your personality and situation. |
