I used to drive into Mexico regularly when I livedin Arizona. Forget about your US insurance... even if they do cover you in Mexico, Mexican authorities will not recognize US insurance. And not having insurance can land you in jail if they want to be you-know-whats. You can get Mexican insurance through Sanborns www.sanborns.com.mx before you leave home or you can easily buy it at any major border crossing just before you cross.

However, the above insurance is daily (and not cheap enough for the long haul). Get a week or so's worth and then when you get to DF, have your wife look for a better deal.

Thanks for the help and information! Daves is always helpful and full of people who are storehouses of information. Hopefully I'll be able to help people in the future once I've been in Mexico City for a while.

Feliz Fin de Semana! Very Happy

You may be able to get an annual policy done ahead of time (on your credit card). It's called "tourist vehicle insurance" and I think many of the agents will email the policy to you to print out. We never see our agent. I pay around $200.00 USD for a basic policy but this year I dropped the "all Mexico" coverage and went for the "zone" coverage because rates have gone up a bit. So ask for the options there. The deductible is quite high and of course the value placed on used vehicles is fairly low, so another consideration for those with older vehicles.

You can follow the Banjercito website for a way to perhaps speed up the process for your car permit. I have friends who have done this and thought it was great. But it's not a big deal just to get it done at the border. The names on your credit card, vehicle title, driver's license, passport and car insurance should match, to avoid hassle. Best to read the website in Spanish if you can, because the English version is rather messed up. (Loved their definition of an FM2. Talk about something getting lost in translation!)

Hey everybody,
Thought I would post this for everyone to see. Go to http://www.mexpro.com they have the best rates and you can get insurance coverage for up to a year.
