In my oral English class I give students an oral exam, thus it is impossible to cheat. |

Yes, I do. At least, I hand in a failing grade (a zero, actually) for any cheaters I catch. If they cheat on the assignment, they get a zero for that assignment. I spell this out very carefully now.
The department can do what they wish with the marks I hand in. I have no way of fighting it if they change marks, but they hired me to do a job, and I'm actually going to do it. To be fair, though, I have no proof either way if the marks I give out get changed. |

Upon receiving his paper with a zero mark, he actually stood up in front of the class to complain that they didn't need a foreigner teacher with a Chinese teaching style. I still don't know what he meant. |
Hmmm ... maybe he means it's not fair you're not a hippie backpacker.
Here are two true stories:
Once when I was in grad school a professor of mine got a weird package in the mail. It included a plagarized paper -- a student had printed out the professor's best-known academic article and handed it in in a class. Of course, his teacher recognized the paper. Part of the student's punishement was to write my professor a apology letter and send him a copy of the plagarized paper.
There was a teacher where I am who dealt with cheaters this way: she took the paper out of their hands and ripped it up in front of the class. THe students boo-hooed because she made them lose face, and when they had to write evaluations, they complained about it and she got the boot. THe next year, the students were really sad that she was gone, and kept sighing, "Oh, we wish Ms. S was still here." They had no idea they had a lot to do with getting her replaced. I was their teacher that semester (they didn't like me so much), and I can tell you, that she had really taught them a lesson because they didn't cheat at all anymore. |

I've had students try to cheat in Oral English exams, such as leaving the door ajar so that they could relay awkward questions to their friends. As if such would not be noticeable...
I also had a student offer me 50 RMB to pass her. She wasn't joking...I burst out laughing, and passed her, sans "consideration". My reasoning was that if she had the ability to offer a bribe in English, she met the criterion for the exam. She failed the semester, though (I grade students on attendance and participation as well as their final exam). |

I gave two of my oral classes their exam yesterday. In ALL of the classes, I had written on the board a list of five words that they had to know and told them it would be an exam question.
One girl wrote the wrong answer, then crossed it out and copied the correct answer (in the exact same order) from the girl sitting next to her. I am going to take both girls to the head teacher today and "have it out". |

Glen...
Oh, yes they do cheat on Oral exams. In addition to Rhonda's ajar door technique, I've had some of my, ah, less talented students sneak in cheat sheets to their interview. I had a desk between us when I asked questions, which now in hindsight was not a good idea. The student flattens the cheat sheet on her palm, and then under the desk, attempts to read me her answers. Her robotic recital and her eyes scanning the sheet like a printer cartridge gives it away. Stupid, stupid, stupid. You can never underestimate how stupid cheaters are. I oughta give 'em extra credit for sheer, unmitigated gall.

So... Today, I had my cheaters stand with me in front of the class monitor. I was strongly advised NOT to call in the senior teacher and so I didn't. The students all swore that they didn't cheat and since I didn't catch them in the act, I relented to an extent.
Dumb attempts...that's the catch. Just not talented cheaters. Arrrrghhh! |
