After the brief, insane burst of torrential rain and high winds yesterday, I was wondering whether we'll have serious flooding this rainy season and, if so, when it will happen.
I know that several neighbourhoods have been inundated already (Kampung Melayu, for instance), but will we get the sort of city-wide fun such as happened earlier this February?
I, for one, think it will happen. Why? Yet more buildings have gone up, the rivers haven't been dredged (again) and there are stories coming from the flood gate operators that the gates are in disrepair and can't handle anything more than a slight drizzle.
Furthermore, I'm placing a date on my prediction: January 4th. I arrived at this conclusion after a careful analysis of meteorological data, a detailed survey of Jakarta's infrastructure and a consultation with a renowned dukun.
Ok, I just pulled it out of my arse, but can you do better?

I'll wager a plate of roast duck and 5 Chinese Renminbi on Feb7th.
I came to this conclusion after having a blinding vision whilst cycling past some brothels on the way to work this morning. |

Put me down for a can of Bintang (or a case of Anker) on January 26: the 300th anniversary of the Rum Rebellion - Australia's only successful coup d'etat - and a Saturday to boot, so we won't get stuck in traffic. |

AfP, shame on you for even attempting a Bintang-Anker exchange rate. One does not exist.
Incidentally, Anker is not the worst beer in Indonesia. Has anyone been reduced to drinking Kuda Putih? It's Anker's lower-grade beer. Christ... |

for the love of all thats good and holy could we please stop the anker bashing. it is a fine brew with a refreshing taste and i can assure you that less than 30% of all anker sold contains glass fragments from their chipped necks.
however.....why is it that at my friendly neighborhood supermarket of french origin
1. the anker bottles cost more than the bintang....BUT
2. the bintang cans cost more than the anker.......BUT
3. six packs of anker cans cost more than the six packs of bintang cans
?????????????????? |

I drink Anker at home as my local warung always seems to run out of Bintang and if you read the label it is about 6 months old if they have it. I pay 63,000 rp for 6 large bottles, brand doesn't seem to make any difference. Anyone out there paying less than that? I have no preference really they are both ok drops but if I went home I probably wouldn't touch it if I saw it on the shelf as there are numerous local beers to choose from. Back on the main topic-I also choose Chinese New Year as the date. Will stock up on beer and dvd's for the occasion. I work in South Jakarta and live in Central Jakarta. Will be interesting times ahead. |

Anker is brewed from cough medicine by vicious, malformed trolls in Bekasi. End of.
Back on topic, does no one think we'll avoid the floods this season? |

Perhaps I can draw the two issues in this thread together...
If people drank less Anker, would it reduce the strain on the sewage system, and hence reduce the flood risk? |

If people drank less Anker that would mean less p1ss getting bottled, so surely there would be MORE sewage in the drains? |

Well, although it's peeing down today, I can't see a repeat of February happening within the next 14 hours. Therefore, I graciously concede defeat.
Ya bunch of jammy bastids - I wuz robbed!

Do you get these stories while sharing a Bintang with these guys?
ALL beer brewed in Indonesia, regardless of company logo, is awful. |

Nope, from that bastion of journalism, the Jakarta Post.

The bad news is that it's awful. The good news is that there's a lot of it. |

it depends on how much water you need before you can call it a flood. near where I live I practically needed rubber boots to walk in the street the other day and didn't want to mess up my nice clean shoes by walking to the busway so went for a regular bus on the corner near my home. Also there have been stories in Jak post recently about flooded areas in North Jakarta so llama-don't conced defeat just yet. |
