[quote]When I got fired, I felt burned and had a complete burnout. VS, I find your moniker is very interesting and revealing as well as concealing. Veils can cover blemishes and defects as well as beauty. Veils can also affect peripheral vision and give people a blinkered outlook.[/quote]
Surfing through the posts, I came across burnout's very perceptive observation. I think it would be interesting to find out exactly why people choose the monikers they have. Burnout told us why he called himself burnout. It sounds like he had a rough time. I was interviewd by that flinty-eyed headman so I know exactly where he is coming from. I reckon I had a lucky escape.
So all you scribes out there in EFL land, how about explaining your moniker. I sure would like to know why VS chose VS. I bet a lot of others would like to know why, too. Some of the monikers are pretty cool.
Let's start with my own. I call myself yellofello because I once had jaundice as a kid. I was yellow all over. One day when I was walking in a mall with my mom somebody shouted out, "Hey look at that little yellow fellow!!" Well the moniker stuck and my mom used to call me yellow fellow from time to time.
Let's hear from you. |

Mine's easy enough - my name's John Slattery, so my "moniker" is
johnslat
Back in the days when I was a Moderator here, I had the "moniker" of
"Paladin" because "Have Gun, Will Travel " was my favorite TV show when I was young.
The concept of a "knight errant" going about righting wrongs and dispensing rough justice appeals to my "romantic" nature:
"Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.
His fast gun for hire head's the calling wind.
A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin.
Paladin, Paladin
Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin,
Far, far from home." |

I think this is a matter of personal preferences, and also a reflection of a social/cultural/ideological identity of a person.
Some may choose a particular moniker for a fun and a game, others may choose their moniker based on a past good/bad experiences and so on.
In addition, the internet is full of all kind of mafia, from identity theft to bank fraud, so it would be very risky to use your real name as your moniker in this 'uncertain/unknown' virtual world!
The other question is: Is there a relation between the moniker and the avator associated with it?
For example, if you take my moniker and my avator, do you think they are related? Or for example, the avator of VS, which is a black cat (it must be a male cat ) with big eyes and long moustache, what's its relation to its associated moniker?

But, why do your mother call you yellow fellow instead of using your real name? |

Dear 007,
"Or for example, the avator of VS, which is a black cat (it must be a male cat . . ."
Why "must" it be male? Or was that said only in jest?
The black cat is a feline whose fur is uniformly black.
It is not a particular breed of cat and may be mixed or of a specific breed. The all-black pigmentation is equally prevalent in both male and female cats. The black color is of obvious benefit to a cat hunting at night. In Western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of evil omens: in other cultures, they are considered to be good omens."
Regards,
John |

My screen name is simple to explain... I took it from the name of a book about women and the Middle East. And at first when I posted I was very careful to make sure that no one could recognize me from what I posted as I well know how employers in the Gulf can misconstrue the most innocuous statement. Once I knew that I was permanently retired, I haven't bothered to mask clues from my posts and many friends have recognized me through the years.
Johnslat is one of the few using their real names... Scot47 used to, but someone else registered it with the new board.
The black kitty is obviously female as have been all the black cats that have owned me throughout my life. (as all cat owners know, one does not own a cat) Note the pink necklace holding the little solid gold bell...

007 - my mom calls me 'yellow fellow' as a term of endearment. The day the kid shouted out at me, I was wearing a yellow jacket and trousers so what with the jaundice I looked really yellow. I like it when my mom calls me 'yelllow fellow' although she hardly ever uses this nickname nowadays.
What's with the 007 moniker? Are you an Ian Fleming fan? |

No, I am not a fun of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'
I like the number 7 because of its sacredness. |

Boonie pepper is my dad's nickname for me. We lived in Guam at them time I was bestowed with the name. The island had tons of wild and tiny chile peppers dotted throughout the jungle, and my mom would collect them in roadside ditches whenever we went for a ride. I used to run wild when I was a kid and had a temper. I use it because it beats all other nicknames I have accumulated since then . |

It was a suggestion from someone else on the the board. If you've ever lived in/visited Egypt, you might say "mishmumkin" often, but you'd rarely hear it. |

I chose denise because, well, it's my name.
In my current situation I think maybe it would have been better to have chosen a nickname or something... I rarely post on the Oman forum because I'm not anonymous. I'm not sure how many Denises there are in Oman, but I am the only one at my college.
My avatar is Dionysus, and yes, there is a connection, as my name is derived from the wine god. He is a fascinating character, and I'm thrilled that my parents happened to name me after him.

I haven't transferred my avatar over to this account yet, but anyone who's seen enough of the korean boards knows that:
1) this is my real name - G. A. Jackson. I usually sign off post Regards, Glen. No muss, no fuss. It was already what I had been using for my chat name on many boards (tech, gaming, LPTT, etc.) (the purpose behind the '1' is because someone else was starting to register gajackson the same time I was. So if I get something that seems like it was meant for that person (in e-m), I usually just forward it along. They must laugh at some of the stuff they get that was meant for me!
2) my avatar is a giant Kim Jong-Il fighting robot avatar, swiped from the Onion right after it came out. http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27590 Friends of mine and I, who had already been making silly t-shirts & stuff, thought that it would be hilarious to make digital photo stickers & make 'world leader' fighting robots - maybe even try selling them from a street stall. I settled for a t-shirt reprint & the avatar.
Regards,
Glen |

I'm cutting and pasting it from another thread, but it is pertinent to this one ...
Stuck in the beautiful no-where-ness of Salalah, Oman, I was a stone's throw away from the Gulf's version of the Wild West [Yemen], the Rub-Al-Khali [place of emptiness], and the deep blue sea [Indian Ocean].
There was literally nothing to do. Couldn't speak the language. Geography restricted travel.
So there was this beautiful Marin FSM bicycle for sale at an outrageous price. I knew noone would buy it. I waited until they couldn't wait to get rid of it. It had presta valves. Noone could put air in the tires. An ingeneous Pakistani bike mechanic somehow got it going. It became my main mode of transportation. I was known as the crazy European who travels like an Indian everywhere.
Later, one of my colleagues told me in unflattering terms to go fly a kite. So I did. On a trip to Dubai, I bought a 4.9 meter Flexifoil Blade power kite, a Revolution kite, and a gorgeous Flexifoil Stranger stunt kite. I was the only individual within a 1,000 km radius doing anything like this. The winds of the ocean were always perfect. I would bake in the sun and fly my kites on those abandoned beaches of Salalah. I experienced some of my most peaceful moments doing this.
Hence, the name KiteBiker ... because BikeKiter is harder to pronounce.
As for the Avatar - a toe tapping penguin with sunglasses fits me to a tea - a Canadian In Salalah, Oman. |
