"I, too, have been offered a postion with the College of Technology in Salahlah through CECNE, but this post is December 2007 (not Sept 2007). How is is place as a workplace? Does anyone working here recommend this place?"
So your question has two components: CECNE and Salalah
CECNE is not a bad company, they will finalize all of your documents probably after your arrival and once you have your bank account, you dont have to deal with them unless you have a serious question. As for Salalah, it is one of the nicest places in Oman to teach. Weather is good. Students may not be always motivated. It is your job to motivate them.
Good luck. By the way, I work for CECNE too. They used to recruit only Canadians but changed their policy recently. as CECNE was a not-for-profit company setup in Canada. |

Salalah is a very nice place to work. You will not find it to be big on western food, salons, shopping malls (because you will not find any). I found loads of Chinese food and KFC is a plus along with one or two other western restaurants.
But, you will find that part of Oman is very nice for beaches ( to die for beaches) scuba diving and the mountains (Kareef season) and the locals are very nice. They will take you in and treat you like a part of their family.
As for any recruiters like I said before, stay away from them and only deal directly with the schools, colleges and Universities.

ERR, bit out of touch there 4wd,
Salalah now has a "City Centre" mall. In New Salalah Isteqrar have opened a hypermarket that boast a coffe shop selling REAL Italian coffe, anyway you like it. Browniz have opened up a really nice coffee/eatery restuarant not far away.
In fact there are two "City Centres" the other a large Supermarket bang in the middle of Salalah run by "K&M". Also there are the big chain hotels that offer western meals.
Mountains in the Khareef?? NO WAY!! Even if I had the biggest, ruffyest, tuffyest 4WD vehicle would I go up there voluntarily during the season. I do not find driving in dense cloud, in the rain, surrounded by death orientated Saudis, Emiratees and others who like to overtake on quite literal blind bends, any more fun that I would shoving my head into "Jaw's! mouth!
Oh yes, the only non-agency recruiter here in Salalah is Dohfar University and look at the threads we have had about them.

The people in Salalah are great. But as far as, Recuiters are concerned do not trust them.
Salalah reminds me of the sort of Island life you find in the US but in the wrong season. It is a great place to live and work. Food is better than some places in Oman.
Stick with the Colleges and Universities and deal directly with them........ |

You've clearly had a bad experience with a recruiter, for whatever reason - at least one presumes so as every post you put up seems to be raving about this singular issue.
Recruiters are like everyone else in this business (or indeed this life) - some are great professionals providing a quality service, some quite the opposite. I've had experience of both. Some people indeed will have had a great experience with the same recruiter or agency which another individual is bad-mouthing everywhere on the net. But to generalise like you are to all and sundry based on a one-off personal experience in your own past is misleading, and portrays you as either vindictive or somewhat naive. |

No, I would not call myself naive and definitely not vindictive. Maybe experienced would be the word, that is commonly used in the English language. |

Maybe....though the briefest of scans of your posting history would strongly suggest otherwise. |

Dear Zajko,
You need to come to Oman and work. By far, you have it made where you are now. The one good thing that I did do here is tell the truth, and that is all I did.
Sorry you do not agree, but it seems that all the discussions on this OMAN board are UN-surprisingly locked or simply deleted. Not to mention back biting and other things. Although, I did make my point very clear. Like it or not I am really not amused or amazed!! |

Maybe paranoid would be a more appropriate word than naive, then?
FYI I know Oman very well (seemingly better than you, judging by the above and one or two other postings you've made) and worked there for quite a number of years, for various employers and even (shock horror!) recruiters. Thus my comment that some of these are good, some bad. I don't deny that some people have had bad experiences with recruiters, or that some of these recruiters deserve bad press. But to turn every debate on this board into a diatribe on this one issue and accuse anyone who says otherwise of being a fraudulent poster writing under a false name is ridiculous, somewhat childish and only works to obfuscate or negate whatever jusification your original argument held. |
