				| As I understand it from a colleague who is changing jobs in January you have to leave the country for a bit, get visa cancelled etc simply in order to make sure you are overseas hire if nothing else. But the days of having to leave for a year or however long are over. Loads of people have moved directly from e.g. UAEU to NAPO, Al Ghad, HCT etc in the last 12 months. | |

				| When I think about it, most - if not all - of the people that I knew who transferred were doing it at the end of their contract and the academic year, so they were going on summer leave anyway.

				| I want to move to another college or work in another place altogether. Will they block me? I've had another offer. Do I have to leave the country?

				| Are you breaking your contract? If so, I expect that they can and will.

				| I will finish out the semester if I can stick it. I want to work in a calm peacefujl place with rational reasonable people. The teachers are fine but the headman at the top of this college needs his head examined. He's slowly metamorphosing into a giant roach. Remember what happened to poor old Gregor? At least Gregor had a heart. This man has a hole where his heart should be. Where did they find him? He needs to be replaced and fast. People like this should never be appointed to positions of authority. Diabolical.
If they won't release me, I'll leave. I think the UAE is great but the job will not keep me here unless things change. Already have an offer from another more serious institution and one from Brunei. Never been there but it sounds intriguing.

I will try to stick it out VS. Gracias for your advice.

				| So far as I'm aware and have seen, if you give proper notice even though you don't complete the contract HCT will not be able to block your going to another campus. I've seen people go to the University of Sharjah, ZU, UAEU, AUS and some western universities setting up in Dubai. If you have a contact at another campus who can approach their HR person to make enquiries discretely - why not? | |

				| At one of colleges, people who gave proper notice have been blocked as have some whose contracts were not renewed but no reasons given. It's very arbitrary. | |

But, unfortunately I do believe that they can block you. In my experience these places can do pretty much what they want.

Isn't it already or very soon too late to give notice for this year? It used to be six months, but I heard that the contract wording changed so that you couldn't leave during a semester.

				| Here's a question just to the left of on-topic. I know somebody working his/her first contract in the HCT system and is somewhat in a quandry as to where s/he stands re: being renewed. My friend has been formally asked if s/he would agree to an extension of three years if offered (and, of course, responded in the positive) and has heard that the next step in the process is the actual offer for renewal which should come before the semester break. S/he has received a favorable observation report. If the offer of extension DOESN'T come before the semester break, what is the message being sent? Thanks.

				| We can only guess, of course, but if your reviews are fine and they have asked for and received confirmation that you will renew if offered, you're likely fine. Considering the Eid interruption and end of semester exams and grading and such, not hearing is probably not unusual.
Considering their difficulties these days getting enough teachers... I'd tell your friend not to panic yet.
