We've got exams this week.

Round noon, there's a knock at my door. I open it and see one of my low-level boobs -- one of those dudes who slept his way through the first semester.

Buddy's grinnin' like a fool -- tells me how awesome I am, and says he's gonna take me out to lunch, with three other low-level boobs. FOR FREE!

"Don't bring money! You can drink so many beers!"

After swallowing my bile of disgust, I kindly told him I was busy, and shut the door.

Ugh.

The weird thing is, I thought I'd nipped this in the bud.

A teacher here last year took Y200 per student for a passing grade.

A few weeks ago, I recounted that tale in each of my classes, and told them that if they wanted to do that with me, I'd only accept Y5000.

Lunch and beers, eh? Rolling Eyes

If the chicks I teach weren't so gnarly, I might've offered a second option.

Oh well...

I haven't been at this school for a complete year yet but I've noticed wherever in the world I have worked that benevolence is a very seasonal thing - and I don't mean at Xmas.

Funny how the large chocolate cakes from XYZ's mother always coincided with grading the end of year exams...

You should fail the entire quartet twice over for having such a low view of their beloved FT. "Free lunch"? Those lunches are but one thing: torture-through-tedium (regardless of how much pissbeer is present).

"Please, numb my brain and I'll give you an A". Seems in these students' sleepy eyes, foreigners rank somewhere between storm drain scum and broke alcoholics who'll do anything for gulp of two kuai swill.

Fail them three times over.

I had a few rich morons whose grade was f and i gave them a c becuase i was kind try to bribe me.

The other day a few f-c students asked me what they could do to make their grade higher. they were fishing and I wasn't in a mood to play...

However, one nice rich very pretty girl did take me out for a great dinner, just the two of us, and kindly ask me to raise her grade from the c she got ( and she admitted cheating to get that grade) to an a...

It was a nice dinner and an a- seems like a good grade for her...

Now just a few nights ago 7 girls took me out to a great dinner. The beauty of this dinner was that they were all a students and didn't want a damn thing from me...

Jeff, I'm actually a little disappointed. An undeserved "C" further risen to an "A", and all it took was a nice dinner? Must have been one damn fine example of pretty.

No Shan-shan, you don't get it. My jeffy, you're the sly one. She spreads the word, a little free advertising, and he'll be getting more and more and better and better offers. Fundamentals of business. Let them have the new product cheaply, then raise the price once you've developed the market.

U the man

My sinofication is obvious in how I missed the elegance and craft of Jeff's business moves. Kudos.

Hey I teach business... I know the value of some good PR and how Word Of Mouth is better than any advertising...

Plus when you have a nice quiet dinner with a pretty rich girl student you learn things that you would never have known...

For example, one girl told me how a chinese teacher has one of his students for his girlfriend. Another told me how the on campus restaurant we were eating in also had a hotel where many of the students "go to play". And of course how low the students opinion of the school is...

And some of the feedback is pretty good indeed...

And bribes to me have been offered yes... But becuase I will continue to work at this school i will shy away from direct input on this subject...

Don't worry Jeff, we can read between the lines, even when there is nothing to read there (Chinese girlfriends are very good at that Laughing )

It's not easy knowing what is meant as a bribe and what is meant as a gift or a nice gesture though... I've only had one obvious attempt from someone to bribe me - a student offered a Chinese painting for a pass - the problem is that I don't want to accept a free meal or some fruits or a Christmas present if it's meant as a bribe, yet if it's not I couldn't exactly refuse... And it's not like gifts or dinners are only offered by students who you grade - they were just as common in the evening classes that I didn't grade.

I had a good term this year . Even the brain dead did some work for me. I don't take my position so seriously and pass everyone I know. What I have found is that if I give them a mid term with high marks they perfom better on the final. I test my students three times during a term . I test them at the beginning or do and assessment. I have never been offered a bribe and usually take a good class out to dinner at my expense. So you can make more money by failing them. Interesting

I can tell you that several days before Xmas I told the class that it was a Western tradition to give your teacher gifts of chocolate or money for the holidays...

I did receive some very nice chocolate gifts from some very pretty girls - all of which were existing A students. One boy who averages a straight C and is taking the class for the 2nd time, did give me a nice big bar of Nestle chocolate that originated in Switzerland...

No money but I didn't really need or want any...
