My most reliable income is rental properties that I purchased and paid off courtesy of jobs in Korea, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia. In fact, I am only 57 and I can't start my Social Security payments for about five more years.

Property, yes, goes up and goes down in value, but my rental income stays pretty stable and has allowed me to take the risk of chasing other ideas - which I have been very happy to do - and quite successful in doing.

Where have you bought your property? Is it a complicated process being that you are a foreigner?

Most of it in the USA, my country of origin.

But have also bought an apartment in Thailand, but that is a 30+30 year leasehold. Not much more difficult than renting an apartment really.

Vanguard Total Stock Index Fund.
$3000.00 min. to get started.
no load.
very good historical returns.
$500.00 - $1000.00 per month for twenty or so years should have you sitting pretty.
prospectus can be viewed online at tha Vanguard website.

roth IRA is also a good option as a second tier investment.

Well, if I do make it to be very, very crusty, I think I'll just go to a nice civilised country like Sweden and do something to make sure I get at least ten years inside their lovely prison system. Not as daft as it might sound, more interesting company than some old folks' home, medical attention as and when required, safer than the outside...hell, when you are in your 70's, freedom, who needs it!!
