Likewise. 2003 can be summarized in two words: We survived. Here's hoping for a good NYE and more stable 2004 year to follow.

Ni hao.

I'm sitting by myself, killing a bottle of Suntime Red and cooking a late supper. That is just about how I've celebrated New Year for the last 8 years, so it's not as though this new year is in any way a lonely one. One of my Chinese colleagues has invited me to join her and some friends tomorrow, something I might do.
I don't like making resolutions, but I do find this a good time to reflect on the past and examine ways to change the future. For me, there are two obvious things to do. One is to become a better teacher, but if I knew how then I'd already be doing it. I can think of many things in the classroom that I do wrong, or don't do as well as I could, but how do I prepare myself so that I don't make (continue to make!) needless mistakes? The other is simply to make a greater effort to learn
Chinese. I decided more than a year ago that foreign acquaintances come and go, but local friends are always there for you. So why haven't I made a greater effort to learn the language, to make friends that last? Sheer dumb-*beep* laziness, it seems.

Making dinner and watching videos. Decided to not touch a drop for a change. Did the same at Xmas. I'll probably bang a few pots at midnight.
I miss listening to the gongs in Japan.

All the best in 2004!

London is cold. There is a good chance of rain about midnight, the police and mayor of London are recommending that people stay in. There are fears of terror attacks (yawn) - and no events have been organised, apart from a 3 minute firework display. Trafalgar square, the traditional gathering place for drunken crowds, will be closed off and no alcohol is allowed. *beep*! Talk about trying to spoil the party...

Naturally, I'm going up to central London anyway - the idea being to get so incredibly intoxicated that all of the above no longer matter. In fact, I'm going to get completely fucked. So, assuming I don't die of

a) A terrorist attack
b) Pneumonia
c) Alcohol poisoning
d) A drug overdose

then the first thing I'll do when I get back tomorrow morning is hop on here to chat about linguistics and teaching methodology. Wink

I'm afraid Captain James T. Kirk has been battling a bad case of the flu, so no going out for me tonight! However, Bones has hooked me up with a bunch of NyQuil, which kind of looks like Romulan Ale, so if I drink enough of that, I should be able to have a pretty good NYE!

I'm looking forward to 2004! Everybody have a good and safe celebration, if you haven't already.

Cheers,
Kirk

Since my budget is limited and the weather is bad, I'll probably stay home and kill a few pints of Guinness as I watch fireworks from the roof. But that's all right -- I'm in the mood for a (relatively) quiet night.

Best wishes to everyone in the new year. Here's hoping the ill and injured get back on their feet soon.

Happy new year, ladies and gents!!

I spent the evening at a cozy little house party in San Diego. I'm in the middle of a lengthy vacation, and I'm enjoying nearly every minute of it--the exceptions being that damn speeding ticket that I got and a nasty flu/cold from which I am still recovering. (Hmmmm... I just came from Taiwan... Could it be that dreaded disease?!?!?)

Denise, in answer to your question, since you are recovering without major medical intervention, no!

Yeah, looks like I'm stuck with a garden-variety flu. Blah. At least I don't have to worry about infecting my dear friends with SARS. (Whereas infecting them with just another strain of flu is perfectly OK?!?!?)
