I have been here 4 years now and worked in five provinces each with their own rules for my visas and foreign expert certificate. Now I needed to get an extension on my visa so I can move on to my next job. I was told this couldn't be done but they were willing to give me a tourists visa for two months. Has anyone else done this? I am afraid they will then tell me I have to leave the country. |

It can be done. Will they do it is the question. My personal experience. Who said no, the new school or the PSB?
First, being switched to a tourist visa was a pain, had to leave the country to get the z-visa tio come back in (yeah, I know, there are schools that say they will switch your visa for you)
You are on a F visa? Or z With the new RP being in the passport I switched schools once, and they (PSB) said no problem as long as the the school applies for the RP before it expired. Worked fine.
If you have enough time left on your RP I would try staying on it. Switching to a L visa can always be done hasle free if neccessary. But again, I had no problem switching schools using the same RP. It was just extended for the length of the new contract |

I think there is an unbendable rule of a maximum stay of 1 year before having to leave the country. Is this correct? So if you had 30 days left on your visa and you changed it to a tourist visa you would still have to leave at the end of one year and come back in. |

Itsme there is no such thing as an unbendible rule in China. Thanks folks but I guess I just have to trust them. I think my real problem was with last year. I had my passport renewed on my last job so my Z visa was on my old passport. Now somehow things were worked out without them seeing my Z visa. I think maybe things were not done properly and the person responsible doesn't want a hassle. |

Definitely no. There is a rule, usually not enforced that I know of, after five consecutive years teaching you must go home for a year (the idea that your english may decline. This is not a PSB rule but a SAFEA???guidline |

I know of nobody who was held to this so-called 5 year rule.
Also, I find it a bit odd that the law could require I go "home for a year."
It's just like my mother ordering to my bedroom. |

Can not stay employed as a teacher the 6th year. Some groups that supply teachers follow this rule. there is a Christian group that encourages/enforces this rule, but you don't find many Born-agains posting on Dave's, can't imagine why
In the most oppressive backward city in Henan (which is saying a lot) a really awesome energetic teacher was denied permission to come back on this rule. Scuttlebutt was because he was not living in the school hotel-converted rooms, but with a local Chinese girlfriend |

When did SAFEA become the group that tells me I have to leave the country? Isn't that Immigration/PSB ? |

If you have a new job you can do it. Just express mail your passport and docs and their FAO will do it before you depart your current employer.
However, if there is a defect in your paperwork, you may have a problem.
Yes, you probably will have to leave the country if you don't get your FRP extended. I'd advise you find a new job and be a bit assertive. You'll need your school to coordinate with the new FAO. |

Yes, that's fine and dandy IF your new school is willing to take you under the umbrella of their sponsorship while you are not actually employed and/or working for them. Not all schools are willing to support you on the visa/FRP f if you have not begun your employment. There are legal responsibilities of your visa sponsor and some are not willing to accept them if you're not there yet. |
