Hello everyone,

Do you have any info on this school? The Zhongshan branch in GD in particular?

Thanks.

Hello, Kate,

I have been in touch with its owner, and I have had a very good feeling so far.
I heard about it previously, maybe two years earlier, and the general consent was equally positive.
I think the fact that the owner spends part of the time in Canada is a good thing.

Youmight care to know that Zhongshan is a nice place to live, half-way between Macau/Zhuhai and Guangzhou.

I had an offer of employment from the zhongshan school in October. Everything seemed fine with them as far as one can tell via email. However, I did not accept the position for the following reasons.

1. On the school website is a letter written by an ex-teacher saying what a wonderful time she had at the school & how helpful & nice the staff / management were. This sounded great, but you somehow get the impression that this is not written by a native speaker. I could be wrong, but I felt that it was really written by a chinese person at the school. Have a look - let me know what you think. It's just that I study ancient history and have to access authentic material / false...

2. That said, I was still not put off until I read in the contract that the school retains the right to send you [at anytime during the contract] to any of it's three schools. One of which is in Mongolia & having looked on the map I thought 'no way'. Although, as I understand it, this is quite common in contracts, but I wasn't going to take the chance of being sent there, even if i started out in Zhongshan.

However, I found the person I was in contact with, Mr Zhong / Zhang was very helpful. But the above just 'put me off'.

I wish you all the best & hope things work out.

Nodds,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did visit their site, but I usually do not believe everything I see on any website, especially if they are promoting themselves.

I can understand your apprehension about the Mongolia/other locations clause. I have mixed feelings about it, which is good. I'm still considering them.

Yes, I need the luck. Well, don't we all, when working in a place where business practices are completely alien from what we are accustomed to?

Hi Roger,

Of course, I could count on you to know at least something about them.

Does this mean you are considering joining them, too?

On another note, thanks for your tips on getting the visa. I did so from Phoenix. I printed out your letter & clung to it. It proved crucial when I got to Nathan Road, 'cos believe me, I didn't see a single sign for a travel agent, other than CTS. Since you had written that Phoenix was at 96 Nathan, I zeroed in on that place. Got charged a whopping 600 bucks instead of the usual 240 since it was a Sat. The whole trip was an expensive one, but valuable lesson indeed.

Hello, Kate,

I am thankful for the other poster's elucidation. I am not any farther down the road to being employed by BOND than you are, and I told them I wasn't very likely to ever be as I don't fancy giving up my home for the charms of a rented flat owned by my employer in a town 30 kms from my home.

On the matter of your supposed transferability I have to comment that if they do that it's illegal. Hiring you in Zhongshan means you are given a work visa valid for ZHONGSHAN only. I know from my own experience that being transferred to another province can result in a disaster!

As for your Hong Kong adventure, I am sorry to read you had to pay more than double; however, you did not state how long your current visa is valid. Six months normally cost HK$ 750 (multiple entries). Applying on a Saturday does indeed lead to higher costs because it's not a regular work day.
