Dear Anyone Who Can Shed Light,
My girlfriend and I live and teach in Tokyo at the moment. We will be visiting the Uruguayan Embassy to get some Visa answers. But I wonder if someone can tell me what to expect. We both have Canadian passports and teaching experience. What are the difficulties in aqquiring a Uruguay working visa ? As well, what can I expect in terms of finding full time work and accomadation there. Can anybody help me with these answers? I am so in the dark with this idea at the moment. My research has just began. I appreciate any helping hands.
Peace and regards...

do a search on "montivideo" or something....
or, try and contact this person "MisterBrownPants"?
he/she is living in Montivideo and can help
don't expect to save a lot there, unless you have a Canadian Teaching Certificate or something...then, you might be able to get into one of the 3 or 4 private highschools they have there.... |

Thanks for the direction John. To tell the truth, I have one more year of lolligagging around until I have to go back to Toronto. So saving is second to interesting lessons and culture soaking. I appreciate your time.

Ok, first, in general, unless you work at an international school or are married to a national, work visas are hard to come by.
However, lots of people work under the table. There are few and far between adverts for Uruguay, in fact, I've only seen a couple in five years.
Try contacting misterbrownpants she's been there for a while.
I did see a posting, I think it was onon esljobfeed.com I think.
Try also paginasamarillas.com and look for Uruguay.
Or just show up, that's a good way to get a job, you can see what the shcools look like as well. |

...there's three i know of...probably more...i put down "Alianza Francaise", because i thought coming from Canada, you probably know French?
The French Alliance would probably take you if you are 'intermediate' level with a decent accent.
...the other "AngloUnion" ...looks pretty decent also, check out their website. |

from the yellow pages, I presume? I must saying, working for a school, rather than an istitute, has its pros, paid vacations, no night classes, but you DO work hard. |

i think all of those i put up are 'institutes'...there's probably more. he said he's coming from Tokyo and only looking for 1 year.
TOBrian, you should just get a tourist visa, and do border runs to Argentina. unless, one of these institutes will convert your tourist visa to a work visa once you get there. |

The Colegios and Liceos are schools. Is Berlitz in Uruguay? Sorry to hear that Guildford went under.
What about privates? |

I have a friend who lives in Piriapolis. He moved here from Santo Domingo, DR and has had problems breaking in to the Uruguay teaching scene. He wrote an article for me about it here
Entrance to Uruguay is easy and it is a wonderful country. It helps a lot to have connections here. Business is done by association |

When I was studying in Montevideo (wow, almost 6 years ago), there was a Berlitz.
I volunteered at Alianca the English school and there was an American working there - but I don't know what kind of visa he had.
Good luck! |

When my wife and I checked out Uruguay, there wasn't a lot of teaching work, but the visas were easy to get. We qualify for PR just with our income from the US. |
