So as I start to explore employment opportunities in the UAE for the coming academic year I'm faced w/ some concerns about bringing the kitty. I'm familiar w/ the process of getting the pet into the country, but it's the logistics that leave me muddled.

Most employers seem to be placing new hires into temporary accomodation (hotel/hotel apt) at least for few weeks. For those who bring their pet, do they opt to bring them on the same flight and have them boarded immediately in a local kennel? Has anyone opted to send the pet on a separate flight once they've settled (likely requiring boarding in the home country)? Is is less expensive to take your animal on the same flight that you're on vs. sending the pet as cargo on a separate flight?

I have done this both ways. Boarding in home country - fly them in after I get assigned permanent digs and fly them in with me on the same flight - board in UAE until I get permanent digs.

Cost with me or alone is moot - most airlines will not allow you to fly them as "excess baggage" anymore. They fly as cargo whether they're on the same flight or follow you on another flight. Advice? Check with your airline(s). If they fly with you, be sure to check well in advance about how the animal will be routed. If you plan to change airlines in Europe (especially UK) you will probably find this is not allowed for the animal (must travel on one airline all the way through).

Dubai Kennels and others offer a pickup and assistance with paperwork etc. at the airport. Well worth it IMHO.

Brought two cats in from North America last year.

Used an agent and they were able to find a cheaper flight than the one I was travelling on for cargo even though both we and the cats arrived in Dubai within a few hours of each other. Not that we had to pick them up as we used Dubai Kennels. The last thing you want to do is arrive here and try to find your way around to the cargo section in the middle of the night to try and pick up your cats!

I'll second the sentiment thatDubai Kennels is well worth the price. One less thing to worry about, they can take care of everything, AND I found them professional to deal with, getting back to any inquires promptly.

We simply had them deliver the cats 5 days later once we had move into our villa.
Good luck

That is great. Will Dubai Kennels will deliver all over the Emirates? I don't suppose that they have a branch in Abu Dhabi yet.

I am always impressed when a company shows up to fill a need like this.

I just glanced through some of the documents, but is their assistance limited to pets from the UK? Is there anyone out there who has used them from North America?
