Hi

Other half has secured a job at an International School in HCMC, she is a Primary Teacher, great package and accomodation.

I on the other hand work in the Electricty Field and have no teaching experience, qualified only up to A Levels.

I plan on taking my CELTA with ILA, HCMC.

What are my chances of getting work without a degree, would happily study for a degree if this was a requirement and what sort of salary/hours would I be looking at?

Thanks

Ed

you can always search for more info, but i think its like 12/hr is the general going rate with a degree. If not, I would imagine less.

Once you have the teaching certificate I don't think that should be any reason that you would be paid less than the going rate for teaching - though the poster above me might be right.

Also you might be able to sell your other work experience, as some of the bigger schools often have contracts with some of the government ministrys and big business and are often on the look out for people with specialist skills, business backgrounds etc. If you are a presentable, professional type, you might find that you could eventually build yourself a reputation as a corporate/business teacher. But expect that you'll be expected to teach kids and teenagers to start of with too.

The only real issue is with the work permit - youre supposed to have one and in order to get one you're supposed to have a degree.

Hi Ed

I believe that you will be sponsored on your wife's visa. It's called a spousal visa (I think). However, you can teach (not strictly legally but no-one tends to ask questions unless you upset someone) on a Business visa. The only problem with them is they have to be renewed every 6 months.

I taught there on a business visa and never had any problems.

I really loved working in HCMC and have in mind to go back there soon(ish).

The accommodation for ISHCMC is really nice and the only complaints the teachers living there had was that it was too close to school, literally a 2 minute walk, if that and that you are living in the same compound as the other teachers so no real down time.

If you or your wife have any questions about ISHCMC feel free to PM me. I'll do my best to answer.

Good Luck

I believe you are talking about a C1 visa which is for a full year. I think that it is for foreigners married to Vietnamese only. I would have to check, but I have one of those.

A tourist Visa will work just fine too. A business visa is not the same as a work permit, it just allows you to come into VN with the intention of doing business, not obtaining work. Again, most places don't care and you should be able to find something to do. Getting a visa renewed every 6 months is a pretty standard practice for a lot of people here.

If you will be living in D.2 near that campus, they you would be looking at some travel time. None of those schools out there will probably take you. You would be close to Thu Duc though, and some of the language mills out there are begging to have Western staff out there as they have a hard time maintaining staff due to the travel distances.
