Hello

I land in tokyo in 11 days. I have a working holiday visa. I plan on doing work with a casting company as well as teaching english.

I have funds to live for a 3 months jobless.

I will be looking for a job when I land. Ive heard the market is flooded right now.

Explain this a bit more, from experience. How flooded are we talking here. I really have no teaching experience. I do have Tesol and a good young white look , and thats about it. I want to live in this country and really hope it doesnt turn into a 3 month holiday

You can sift through some other threads here for finer detail, but basically it's still pretty rough here. The jobs that I've found available ask for at least some practical experience, and the money is about as low as they can legally make it. If money's not a problem, and you're willing to gut it out, you can find work. Just be prepared for a bit of a rough ride, and don't expect a dream job.

It took a while but I think the last of the starving Nova teachers breathed their last a couple of weeks ago. It's probably safe to come over now.

It's more like a bad horror sequel actually, just when you thought they were gone...

Recently G-com sent out notice that all teachers still on standby are now not going to be employed at all, and that there was no work for them. So that's at least a few more people roaming around. And if what my roomate (who works for new nova) is telling me is true, then get ready for more homeless Nova's soon. The worst might be over, but be prepared for some more aftershocks.

Not much good. Some of what he told me can be plainly seen by anyone watching the siutaion. G-com hasn't opened the large amount of schools they wanted, and even the ones they have are pretty quiet. They aren't exactly getting flooded with new students, and even the old ones aren't exactly returning in droves.

Some of the other stuff I won't repeat since I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to talk about it, and I don't want to risk the chance of getting my roomate in hot water. It'll come to light soon though I think, but it's not good news I can tell you that much.

Bottom line, the blood letting is still going, maybe not as dramatic, but still sad.

Am I correct in assuming this isn't having a major impact on the higher end of TESL where grad degrees, experience, and Japanese are typically required?

You are probably right. But NOVA teachers are people who have been here anywhere from 2 weeks to several years, and even they need degrees, so if they have picked up Japanese language skills along the way, they have all 3 of the items you mentioned. You might be surprised to learn what degrees some eikaiwa teachers have! It's not just a BA in geography sometimes.

However, as for needing degrees, read this link before it dies.

Doh! I think I know a few people who decided to go with G Comm and were waiting for schools in their area to re-open. Nova just keeps on screwing!

Yo! Glenski, don't bullsheit yourself.

I've met guys at NOVA with Master's degrees, MBA, Law degrees and even certified teachers from Canada, U.K. and the U.S.A.

Sounds unbelievable - but true! Very Happy

what's "new nova"? and which companies still sponsor from overseas?
I hear GEOS still has many overseas recruitment places shut down. Are they also having trouble?

G-COM took over many of NOVA's offices and kept the NOVA logo up. Don't know if they advertise for overseas recruiting, but as far as I know, nothing else has changed. You can still see ads for such work from

GEOS
AEON
ECC
Altia
James English School
David English School
Language House
Peppy Kids Club
Westgate Corporation
Interac
JET Programme

Same old faces. If anyone knows of others, cite them. There ARE some others who do phone interviews, but nobody seems willing to post their names.

Have heard nothing but unsubstantiated rumors about GEOS, so I won't bother to look back at the threads to point them out.

Master's degrees in what? Geography, Pottery?

Law degrees are 10 a penny in the UK and most people with them don't use them. It's regarded as something to study if you don't know anything else as there are no specific prerequisites.

Certified teachers surprise me. Why would they be at Nova? Probably scared of kids that bite back and I can't say I blame them.

This drivel is from the clueless troll Professor Miyazaki. Ignore it.
